In today's world, we face the pressing challenge of fostering a more fact-based society. We must explore methods to diminish polarization and misinformation while promoting constructive dialogue among citizens.

The internet and social media undeniably play a role in the decline of civil discourse, but how can we effectively address these issues? While the right to free speech is a cornerstone of our democracy—one that distinguishes us from places like North Korea—it also allows individuals to voice unfounded opinions.

Historically, the spread of misinformation was limited since only a few reputable media outlets existed, with trained journalists adhering to strict standards. These journalists were committed to reporting factually, which benefited society by providing a reliable source of information. News broadcasts focused on presenting the facts, while opinions were mostly reserved for editorials, where biases were openly acknowledged.

Now, with the rise of the internet, anyone can disseminate their views worldwide, often with little regard for accuracy. Cable news networks cater to niche audiences with financial motives to maintain outrage and misinformation. Social media platforms amplify this issue by allowing misleading content to gain traction rapidly, resulting in the chaotic information landscape we navigate today. So, how do we reconcile our rights and responsibilities?

Relying on social media companies to rectify this situation is unrealistic. While these platforms have the resources to employ fact-checkers, their business models often thrive on division and controversy. Algorithms perpetuate users' biases, trapping them in cycles of misinformation that reinforce their beliefs.

While addressing the macro-level influences on polarization may require government oversight, we can still encourage individuals to recognize when they are being manipulated by media narratives.
