In a recent episode of the Hardfork podcast, a thought-provoking comment by Casey Newton resonated with me.

Reflecting on personalized AI tools in education

He suggested that the evolution of AI tools and chatbots is likely heading toward increased personalization. With tailored preferences and principles, these systems could become significantly more beneficial for individuals.

If we envision these AIs serving as educators for future students, it's crucial to recognize that different states have varying curricula. This disparity could lead to some chatbots endorsing evolution while others vehemently reject it. It poses an intriguing question: will students resort to using VPNs merely to access a chatbot that provides accurate information about troubling aspects of our nation's history?

This scenario raises a vital issue: how can we safeguard personalized chatbots and educational models from devolving into insular filter bubbles that reinforce biases and favored narratives?

The possibility of students finding it challenging to escape localized “truth bubbles” created by AI systems is a significant concern. This issue may parallel the challenges posed by personalized news algorithms but deserves emphasis: these AI systems are neither neutral nor harmless.

Investments in AI, digital skills, data analysis, and media literacy are essential to critically engage with the models we utilize, rather than passively enjoying their convenience while our critical thinking diminishes.

When we broaden our perspective and place this situation within the context of global regulatory frameworks, we observe the emergence of national and regional boundaries alongside the swift rise of parochial AI systems.

Students will encounter a variety of AI models throughout their educational journeys, each with its unique characteristics, limitations, and inherent biases—whether intentional or not.

Take a moment to envision what it would require for your educational system to adapt and tackle this challenge effectively.
