Chapter 1: The Key to Earning on Medium

In the pursuit of generating over $1,000 monthly on Medium, there's a crucial reality that many hesitate to confront. Engagement is the cornerstone of success here, but the key questions are: how much engagement is truly necessary, and how much time should you devote to it?

Initially, I believed I was doing well by dedicating 3 to 4 hours a day to reading and commenting on others' articles. However, I soon realized my efforts were insufficient. I was overly focused on being thoughtful and nice in my interactions, which diluted my potential exposure on the platform.

While adding value is important, it's essential to reserve your best writing for your own articles. Personally, when I enjoy a piece, I savor it, often spending about four minutes on it. When I leave a meaningful comment, it can take an additional 4 to 10 minutes, leading to a total of 14 minutes spent for just one comment. If I aim to comment on 5 to 6 articles per hour, reaching a goal of 100 comments in a day would require an unrealistic 16 hours of engagement.

With only 3 hours available daily for my Medium business, I allocate 1 hour purely for writing and 45 minutes for responding to readers. This leaves me with just 1.25 hours for growth and engagement, which isn't nearly enough. Despite managing to read and comment on an average of 10 articles daily, it's clear that this is not sufficient if I wish to compete with top earners.

Similarly, Derek Hughes and I observed a similar trend on X (Twitter) last year, where a select few experienced substantial success due to heightened engagement. The algorithm favors those who engage relentlessly, and the reality is that there’s no middle ground: you must dive in completely or not at all.

Reflecting on my year spent engaging on X, I only managed 20-30 comments daily, far below the 50-100 that many gurus recommend. The outcome? Minimal growth.

Why is this important for you to know? Before you invest a full year into Medium with the hope of achieving high earnings, understand that you must go all out if you're just starting. Ten to twenty comments a day simply won’t suffice. Make a decision now: can you commit to commenting 20-50 times daily, on top of your writing and editing?
