# Embrace Self-Care: 22 Simple Ways to Feel Better in 2022

Written on

Chapter 1: The Importance of Self-Care

As we reflect on the challenges of the past year, it's clear that everyone who made it through 2021 deserves some recognition. After all, we navigated a pandemic that kept us apart from our loved ones in unprecedented ways. Despite this, much of the new year's advice tends to treat us like gadgets in need of an upgrade every six months.

In truth, I've observed that frequent attempts at self-improvement can often lead to disappointing results. The rush to set resolutions each January can feel overwhelming, especially when statistics show that nearly half of us abandon these goals by February. This tendency to radically reinvent ourselves simply because a new year has begun can be counterproductive.

However, I had my own epiphany after signing up for a Yoga challenge right before the year ended. This led me to the realization that, in the spirit of self-awareness, it's crucial to understand ourselves, especially when the temptation for new year resolutions and online shopping arises.

Instead of falling into the same traps, I’ve compiled a list of 22 budget-friendly activities to engage in rather than committing to unnecessary (and often costly) self-improvement efforts:

  1. Dance to your favorite song.
  2. Get lost in a game you love.
  3. Enjoy a guilt-free day in bed.
  4. Watch some light-hearted TV with snacks.
  5. Read a book that brings you joy, even if it’s not considered 'literary.'
  6. Wear your favorite outfit, take photos, and then cozy up in your pajamas.
  7. Plan a trip, whether it’s to the local park or a far-off destination, to give yourself something to anticipate.
  8. Organize your finances, especially if it feels daunting.
  9. Return any unwanted holiday gifts within the designated period.
  10. Tend to your plants.
  11. Based on how that goes, consider adding new plants to your collection.
  12. Spend time with a dog, particularly on a tough day.
  13. Gently pet a cat, if it allows you to interrupt its busy day.
  14. Create something artistic.
  15. Experiment with a new recipe.
  16. If it doesn’t turn out well, don’t hesitate to order takeout.
  17. Watch Stanley Tucci’s Negroni video and enjoy a refreshing cocktail.
  18. Reach out to a friend.
  19. If they prefer texts, send a message to show you care.
  20. Vent about what's bothering you without holding back.
  21. Share a hug with someone; you never know when the moment will arise again.
  22. Smile; it can be surprisingly disarming to others.

With our time on earth estimated to be around 4,000 weeks, it seems unwise to squander it on self-criticism. Those who need personal growth often shy away from introspection, while talented individuals frequently feel held back by the desire to be someone else. There’s a wealth of advice aimed at "fixing" individuals, but perhaps we should focus instead on questioning the motives of those who perpetuate feelings of inadequacy.

To wrap things up, when the world feels out of balance, the best advice may come from an unlikely source. Ferris Bueller famously said, "Life moves pretty fast. If you don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it." We have one chance to experience this life, and if you feel compelled to make a resolution, let it be to embrace who you are, as there was never anything wrong with you in the first place.
