Chapter 1: Do Nipples Have Gender?

Recently, a friend posed an intriguing question: do nipples have a gender? Admittedly, it’s not something I had ever contemplated, which left me feeling a bit sheepish. Despite my frequent discussions surrounding nipples, the thought had never crossed my mind.

I tend to associate nipples primarily with breasts. Does that make me biased toward women? Perhaps. I often overlook the fact that nipples on male chests also exist. I don’t refer to them by any different name; they remain nipples to me. However, when enjoying a chilly swim with male friends, they never seem to express concern about their nipples getting hard. Instead, they frequently lament about their shrinking jewels.

What do men think about their nipples? They often engage in conversations about their anatomy, yet discussions about nipples seem to be rare. It appears that men have a distinct relationship with their nipples compared to women.

For instance, my husband has nipples, yet he never worries about covering them up or complains about feeling cold after swimming. Just this morning, after we exited a 48-degree lake, I instinctively covered my nipples despite wearing a swimsuit, as if to shield them from an imaginary bird attack. Meanwhile, my husband, clad only in swim trunks, walked onto the beach without a care. I wonder if he even feels his nipples, though I can't ask him now since he’s at work and prefers not to be interrupted by inquiries about nipples.

In terms of attractiveness, I find male nipples to be appealing, even if they receive far less attention than other parts of the male anatomy. Some well-known male figures have recognized the allure of the male nipple, showcasing them on red carpets—think Harry Styles, Cody Fern, and Colton Haynes. They often sport their nipples in a more flamboyant manner, perhaps under lace or fishnet, likely because traditional button-down shirts don't accommodate for nipple exposure.

Chapter 2: The Role of Nipple Cream

My own bias towards nipple gender might stem from the numerous women I’ve assisted with nipple cream during their nursing journeys. Nipple cream is often a staple in baby gift baskets. Dealing with chapped nipples while nursing can be challenging, and it makes one acutely aware of their own nipples.

Questions arise: Are they chapped? Are they leaking? Why do they feel so sensitive? It's a constant consideration during that time.

Why do men have nipples beyond their role in sexual arousal? This question piqued my interest when I began this blog, leading me to research.

Nipples form in the womb before embryos develop distinct male or female characteristics. Initially, we all start as sexually neutral beings. By the time the Y chromosome manifests, the nipples are already formed.

Many body parts can be classified as vestigial, meaning they no longer serve a critical function for survival, yet they persist. Wisdom teeth are an example, similar to male nipples in that they are no longer essential, but unlike nipples, wisdom teeth have never sparked desire—at least not in a romantic sense.

After pondering this topic, I’m glad I took the time to reflect on male nipples. I feel they deserve more attention than they typically receive. Perhaps if men shifted their focus from their more prominent anatomy to their “twin rosy broaches,” they might find themselves gracing the red carpet more often.
