Chapter 1: The Early Aspirations of Mark Twain

Mark Twain, a cherished icon in American literature, is renowned for his sharp wit and timeless works. However, his interests extended far beyond writing; in his youth, he explored various career paths, including that of a steamboat captain. One of his most audacious ambitions was to monopolize the coca trade, a South American plant that was largely unfamiliar in the United States during his time, and to transform it into a lucrative business.

Samuel Clemens, born in Missouri in 1835, was adventurous at heart. He left formal schooling after the fifth grade but continued his education independently, immersing himself in books and libraries. His love for the Mississippi River led him to briefly work as a riverboat captain—a dream he cherished before fully embracing his writing career under the pseudonym Mark Twain.

Twain's literary legacy includes beloved classics such as The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. A former riverboat pilot and a voice of middle America, Twain's storytelling prowess earned him recognition as "the father of American Literature" from fellow writer William Faulkner.

In 1856, at just 20 years old, Clemens was a typesetter in his brother Orion's Iowa print shop, the Ben Franklin Book and Job Office. It was during this time that he discovered William Herndon's Exploration of the Valley of the Amazon: 1851–1852. Captivated by Herndon's adventurous narrative of his 4,000-mile journey along the Amazon River, Clemens was drawn into a world of exotic flora and fauna.

Describing his fascination, Clemens reflected on the enchanting landscapes and unique wildlife he read about, which included the coca plant. Indigenous people of the Amazon had used its leaves for their invigorating properties, allowing them to labor longer, particularly the Incans in their arduous mining activities. Unbeknownst to him at the time, the coca plant was a precursor to cocaine, a potent and addictive substance.

Clemens believed that coca had the potential to revolutionize American industry. Although he lacked a complete understanding of its effects, he envisioned significant financial gain from introducing it to a largely agrarian society.

With dreams of capitalizing on this new market, Clemens set off for South America on April 15, 1857. He boarded the steamship Paul Jones, armed with as much money as he could gather, determined to reach the Amazon and explore commercial opportunities in coca. He later expressed his ambition:

"I was consumed with the desire to ascend the Amazon… a longing to open up a trade in coca with all the world. For months, I envisioned this endeavor and sought means to reach Para [a Brazilian seaport] and launch this magnificent enterprise upon an unsuspecting globe."

Unfortunately, his plans unraveled upon arriving in New Orleans. To his dismay, he discovered that no ships were headed to Para, nor were any scheduled. Lacking foresight, he had not considered the logistical challenges of his venture.

With his aspirations of coca trade dashed, Clemens shifted his focus back to life on the river, rekindling his childhood dream of becoming a captain. During his journey to New Orleans, he reportedly spent hours on deck without a hat, yearning for the sun-kissed skin of seasoned sailors. With South America now out of reach, he joined the crew of the Paul Jones.
