Why You Should Consider Running a Marathon: A Journey of Strength

Written on

Chapter 1: The Call to Run

Running a marathon can feel daunting, especially when you're in the thick of it. After hitting 13.1 miles, I often find myself questioning, "Why am I doing this?"

Runner braving the elements in the Pacific Northwest

The rain cascades down, pooling in the brim of my hat, reminiscent of an Oregon gutter. Cold droplets trickle down my neck, creating an uncomfortable sensation beneath my jacket. As I breathe heavily, the chill of the 40°F air makes it increasingly hard to draw in a breath through my nose, resulting in a runny nose that I repeatedly wipe on my already-soaked gloves.

Despite the rain-soaked jacket, I’m sweating beneath it, creating a sauna-like effect that traps the heat. The memory of past summer struggles—delivering mail in sweltering heat—floods back to me. Those hot days now provide a stark contrast to my current wet and cold reality.

Section 1.1: The Heat of the Moment

There's nothing quite like the feeling of being encased in heavy, moisture-retaining clothing while trudging through the heat. With temperatures soaring above 100°F, the blacktop feels suffocating, and my legs grow weary from carrying heavy parcels up steep staircases. I long for a breeze to relieve the oppressive heat, but all I can taste is the salt of my sweat as I lick my dry lips for some relief.

Yet, there’s no respite. As I slip into the mail truck to take a quick break from the heat, the inside feels even hotter—a metal oven that makes my rain jacket feel like a trap. Those memories of delivering mail in the heat are etched into my mind.

The bitter cold has its own challenges. On days like today, if I stop moving, I know the sweat will turn cold, wrapping around me like an icy blanket.

Subsection 1.1.1: The Challenge of Endurance

Hour two hits, and I'm in need of more fuel. The rain is now coming at me sideways, and I’m battling against the wind. My hands are stiff within my soaked gloves, making it a challenge to grab my energy gel. The struggle amplifies my frustration, and I can feel my heart rate rising. I need to refine my nutrition strategy, today consisting of a mix of maple syrup, dates, collagen, and lemon juice.

I crave a dry, cold day—anything that would keep my clothes dry and let me see clearly through my glasses. As the year inches towards longer days, I find solace in that thought, remembering the brutal winter evenings spent running in the rain.

Section 1.2: Keep Moving Forward

Each step sends a jolt of pain through my knee. I know that if I pause, the pain will intensify. I must maintain momentum, even as I face a steep climb. I chuckle at memories of my old VW Vanagon struggling to ascend Mt. Shasta, a constant battle against the pull of gravity.

"Slow and steady," I remind myself as I focus on my breath: Inhale, hold, exhale slowly. I’m now in first gear.

Chapter 2: The Triumph of the Journey

Despite the challenges, I push on. It’s understood that cold temperatures can impede muscle function, causing fatigue and diminishing power. However, I concentrate on engaging my thighs, feeling the burn while battling the chill.

Finally, I reach the top of the hill. As the road flattens, a wave of euphoria washes over me. Athletes understand this feeling well—it’s hard work, but the endorphins provide a sweet reward.

Completing my 18-mile run fills me with a sense of achievement. The journey to prepare for a marathon is about more than just the miles; it’s a testament to the mental endurance gained through relentless dedication.

The marathon itself is merely a celebration of every mile trained for and every challenge faced. It is the countless hours of solitude on the road that reveal our true strength and determination as athletes.
