Transformative Healthy Habits That Revamped My Lifestyle

Chapter 1: Introduction to Healthy Living

In this article, I will share some key lifestyle changes that significantly improved my everyday life.

I often find amusement when someone expresses dislike towards me, especially when they notice my body’s resilience after giving birth to twins. It’s a compliment I appreciate because this body has carried and nurtured four children! Admittedly, I was uncertain if I would physically recover as well as I did after my pregnancies. The moment I learned I was expecting twins, I began formulating a strategy to regain my vitality. To clarify, I’m not solely referring to achieving a flat stomach or defined abs; I’m talking about the kind of energy that makes you feel alive, akin to the spirit Beyoncé captures in her music. My primary concern post-birth was how to restore my energy levels, which I knew would diminish significantly after childbirth. I won’t recount my entire birth experience here, but I do want to share how I prepared to care for myself afterward, advice applicable to everyone, regardless of gender.

I reached out to fellow mothers on social media who had also given birth to twins, bombarding them with questions about their recovery times, healing processes, and any potential health issues I should be aware of. Although I might have overwhelmed them, I was determined to gather insights. Given my history of anemia, addressing my iron levels was a top priority. After all, with the babies drawing nutrients from my body, I knew I had to double my efforts.

Rule #1: Hydration is Key

I made it a habit to drink water every five minutes, leading to countless trips to the restroom. I distinctly recall an ultrasound appointment where a nurse inquired about my water intake after seeing me with my large jug. I explained that my thirst was relentless due to carrying twins. Even now, I continue to prioritize hydration. Whenever I indulge in a cocktail or juice, you can bet I’ll soon follow with a bottle of water. Staying hydrated has become a necessity for me, not merely a choice. While I won’t specify an exact amount, I can share the benefits of consistent hydration:

  • Enhances circulation
  • Aids in waste elimination
  • Flushes out toxins
  • Improves nutrient absorption
  • Boosts energy and alertness
  • Supports healthy weight loss
  • Improves skin health
  • Assists muscle development
  • Enhances cognitive function
  • Strengthens the immune system
  • Helps prevent headaches and kidney stones
  • Alleviates cramps and back pain

Whenever a family member mentions feeling unwell, I instinctively ask about their food and water intake. It’s crucial to be aware of these factors.

Rule #2: Mindful Eating

During my pregnancy, I allowed myself to enjoy various foods while also being mindful of my diet. Contrary to popular belief, carrying twins did not necessitate eating for three. While my hunger levels fluctuated, I focused on consuming what my body required. For instance, I made sure to include protein and dairy in my meals, drinking milk twice daily for its nutritional benefits.

When shopping, I plan my purchases carefully, opting for essentials like bread, meats, eggs, fruits, and vegetables, alongside healthier options like cauliflower pasta and rice. I scrutinize labels and, while I do enjoy organic products, I also recognize that my children appreciate their treats, so I maintain a balance. Breakfast, lunch, dinner, and healthy snacks are integral to my routine. I used to skip breakfast but now understand its importance in replenishing energy and essential nutrients after fasting overnight.

I prefer shopping at Trader Joe's for its manageable size, as larger supermarkets can be overwhelming. Occasionally, I visit Giant for bulk items like rice and salmon. I also replaced coffee with chai lattes due to my anxiety, as coffee often exacerbates my condition.

Rule #3: The Importance of Vitamins

Vitamins, like all supplements, should be consumed thoughtfully. Overindulgence can lead to nausea and heightened anxiety, so I recommend starting with one or two and gradually increasing. My approach is to introduce two new supplements at a time, such as B-complex vitamins, which are crucial for energy, brain function, and cellular metabolism. Given my family history with dementia, I aim to support my cognitive health.

I also take prebiotics and probiotics to encourage a healthy balance of gut bacteria, which is vital for digestion. Additionally, collagen supplements are part of my regimen, contributing to muscle mass, joint health, and skin vitality. I take them every other day to avoid excess since I already consume a multivitamin.

Rule #4: Staying Active

This rule was a challenge for me, especially after returning home from the hospital where I spent a week on bed rest. With one of my twins in the NICU, I faced moments of sadness, compounded by my history of postpartum psychosis. However, I was determined to regain my mental and emotional balance. I began taking daily walks, which significantly uplifted my mood and energy levels.

Despite the cold February air, my walks became a rewarding routine. Afterward, I would treat myself to a protein shake, leaving me invigorated and happy. My husband’s encouragement made a world of difference. Even when I experienced discomfort from my C-section, these walks facilitated my recovery. Our bodies are designed for movement, not stagnation, and challenging ourselves physically can yield positive outcomes.

Rule #5: Acknowledge Your Limits

Recognizing when to take a break is essential. I’m fortunate to have a supportive network, as many don’t have the same privilege. Society needs to embrace honesty regarding mental and physical well-being. In my early motherhood days, I neglected my health out of pride, believing that vulnerability equated to weakness. I learned to prioritize self-care, which varies from person to person.

It's perfectly acceptable to admit when you’re struggling. Whether it’s taking a nap, seeking therapy, meditating, or simply listening to music, acknowledging your needs is vital. Toxic positivity can hinder our ability to process feelings; it’s okay to not be cheerful all the time. After the profound changes in my life, particularly the loss of my grandmother and the challenges of twin motherhood, I realized the importance of self-reflection. It’s crucial to let go of blame and recognize that we hold the power to reshape our stories.
