Chapter 1: Rethinking Weight and Health

It may be time to reconsider the constant worries surrounding our weight.

Throughout my life, I've never been one to fit the mold of a slender figure. While I was somewhat slim in high school, the moment I became a mother, the idea of remaining thin slipped away. Standing at 5'7", I wouldn't classify myself as overweight, yet I've consistently carried an additional fifteen pounds. Over the years, this extra weight has gradually increased to twenty, then twenty-five. It’s the familiar cycle of gaining and losing: up fifteen, down five, and so on.

For the past five years, my weight has stabilized, hovering within the 'overweight' category according to BMI standards. If I notice a few extra pounds creeping back, I swiftly address them. However, those stubborn pounds seem to cling on like toffee on a hot day! Even when I attempt drastic measures to lose weight, all I achieve is a loss of muscle, which isn't ideal in your seventies.

Recently, I came across an article that revealed some encouraging news! Researchers have discovered that for individuals over 65, a BMI associated with better health is actually higher than the commonly accepted 'healthy' range. A study published in the Annals of Geriatric Medicine and Research examined physical functioning and found that the most adverse outcomes occurred in participants with a BMI below 25 or above 35. The optimal BMI ranges were identified as:

  • Women: 31–32
  • Men: 27–28

There are numerous studies linking cardiovascular issues, cancer, and strokes to weight, indicating that those who are classified as overweight may experience a lower mortality risk—a phenomenon known as the Obesity Paradox. However, this does not mean that chronic diseases are absent. The aforementioned study noted that individuals with a BMI above 30 were more prone to conditions like hypertension, diabetes, and COPD, especially when their BMI exceeded 35.

Many seniors, who find themselves in the so-called healthy range, often stress about shedding pounds for health reasons. Instead, we should focus on the quality of our diet and how it impacts our well-being.

Increasing protein intake can help maintain muscle mass. Opt for organic, grass-fed beef, organic poultry, eggs, and dairy. Incorporate low-carb options and large salads into every meal. This dietary approach not only supports muscle retention but also enhances energy levels and promotes clear skin.

Now that I understand I can relax about those extra pounds, I feel less stressed—another boon for my health!

If only I could stop fretting about my appearance!

How can I shed

These stubborn fifteen pounds?

Wait! Is it necessary?

In an interesting challenge, I've decided to conclude each piece I write with a haiku poem, distilling my thoughts into just seventeen syllables.
