Chapter 1: The Importance of Patience in Child Development

Throughout my academic journey, a phrase often echoed in my classes that resonates with me today: "Don’t uproot the carrot too soon; it will flourish in due time."

Parents of young children, keep this wisdom in mind, especially when you feel the urge to accelerate your child's progress! In today’s world, where societal pressures often glorify early achievement, there’s a temptation to boast about your child reading at two, quoting Nietzsche at three, or mastering complex math at five. While it may feel rewarding to contrast your child's accomplishments with peers who are still exploring the world through play, such comparisons can lead to unnecessary stress.

Unfortunately, these high expectations often remain unfulfilled. Instead of fretting over your child's development, it’s essential to understand why rushing to purchase educational toys or enrolling them in accelerated programs might be misguided.

First, it’s crucial to recognize that child development is typically viewed through the lens of enhancing higher mental functions (HMF). These functions—such as logical memory, imagination, and speech—are complex and socially constructed, arising through cultural experiences. They rely on innate, immediate functions that develop naturally (as noted by Vygotsky L.S.).

Each mental function necessitates a physiological basis, meaning that specific brain structures are responsible for these abilities. The quality of these functions is closely tied to the maturity of these structures and the neural connections that support them. HMFs are not isolated outcomes of any single brain area; rather, they emerge from the integrated activity of the entire brain, allowing for adaptability and recovery if any area is compromised.

A.R. Luria introduced the concept of functional brain blocks based on anatomical structures. The maturation of these brain areas happens at varying rates. At birth, the most developed areas are the subcortical structures, which form the first functional block—an energy-regulating system that governs wakefulness and emotional memory. This maturation typically occurs around ages 2-3.

When there are disruptions in the development of this first block, children may exhibit lethargy, lack of interest in their surroundings, or erratic behavior as they strive to maintain adequate arousal. Commonly, these issues manifest as emotional instability.

Even in typical development, pressuring children aged 2-3 to memorize letters or cards is not only unnecessary but can also be detrimental. At this stage, their primary focus should be on mastering bodily movements, self-regulation, and learning through varied sensory experiences. Activities such as rhythmic games, singing, and sensory exploration through touch and taste are crucial.

Engaging in enjoyable activities—like finger games, singing, clapping, and playful movement—supports their growth. Reading and sharing simple stories repeatedly lays the groundwork for memory retention, enabling them to recount narratives cohesively when they reach school. Conversations about their preferences and emotions are vital for developing the readiness for further cognitive growth.

Imposing undue restrictions or attempting to teach complex concepts prematurely can lead to significant harm. It is akin to constructing a house starting with the roof—there won’t be a solid foundation to support it.

Consequently, any disruption in forming this foundational block can lead to attention deficits, a lack of interest in learning, and difficulties with self-regulation—trends often labeled as ADHD in contemporary discussions.
