Unlocking the Power of Smart Notes for Enhanced Writing

Written on

Chapter 1: The Importance of Notes

Notes serve as a crucial tool for both writers and learners, acting as the backbone of a more organized and effective writing process. They not only streamline writing but also enhance learning by facilitating the generation of unique insights and arguments derived from reading. Personally, they have enabled me to publish two articles each day.

To maximize the benefits of notes, it’s vital to understand three main types: Fleeting Notes, Literature Notes, and Permanent Notes. In this article, I will guide you on how to effectively employ these types to elevate your writing, thinking, and learning.

Fleeting Notes

Fleeting notes act as spontaneous reminders for your thoughts. Their primary role is to quickly capture ideas during activities like reading. For instance, jotting down marginal notes or highlighting key sentences in a book exemplifies the creation of fleeting notes.

However, fleeting notes have a significant drawback: they lose their value unless reviewed within a day or so and transcribed into more structured notes.

Example 1

Book: "Retrieval, elaboration, spaced practice, interleaving, and concrete examples are the best study strategies..."

Fleeting note: 5 study strategies.

Example 2

Book: "Learning is about linking information to long-term memory. Students often fall victim to the illusion of learning when they believe they have grasped something, but they haven't..."

Fleeting note: Insightful headline: the illusion of learning.

Literature Notes

Literature notes focus on retaining essential information. These notes represent more detailed summaries of the material you’re engaging with, ensuring that you remember vital concepts.

Recommendations for Literature Notes:

  • Use your own language.
  • Keep them concise.
  • Be selective in what you include.

Example

Book: "Our minds are divided into two systems: System 1, which is fast, intuitive, and emotional; and System 2, which is slower, more deliberative, and logical..."

Literature note: "In 'Thinking, Fast and Slow', Daniel Kahneman describes two thinking systems: 1) System 1: fast, automatic, no voluntary action; and 2) System 2: slow, logical, voluntary."

Permanent Notes

Permanent notes are designed to further develop ideas derived from both fleeting and literature notes. To start crafting them:

  1. Review your fleeting and literature notes.
  2. Explore how they connect.
  3. Document your thoughts.

Advice: Focus on creating arguments rather than merely accumulating information. When completed, ensure to link these notes for easy retrieval later.

Example

Book: "Our minds are divided into two systems: System 1, which is fast, intuitive, and emotional; and System 2, which is slower, more deliberative, and logical..."

Fleeting note: "Two systems. Potential headline: 'How we think using two systems'."

Literature note: "In 'Thinking, Fast and Slow', Daniel Kahneman proposes two systems of thinking: 1) System 1: fast, automatic, no voluntary action; and 2) System 2: slow, logical, voluntary."

Permanent note: "Could non-human animals possess two systems as well? Observing certain behaviors in cockatoos suggests they might. Suitable headline: 'How animals think'."

Enhancing Your Writing with Smart Notes

Utilizing these notes can amplify your creativity by 100%. They also improve the quality of your writing by making the process more structured and intellectually rewarding. For instance, when I embark on writing a new article, I skip brainstorming and instead refer to my notes in Obsidian to decide my topic.

Smart notes facilitate the generation of original ideas for future projects, ensuring that you never run out of content.

Final Tips:

  • Approach reading with specific questions.
  • Write as if addressing an audience.
  • Focus on creating arguments instead of merely collecting information.

Implementing this strategy will undoubtedly enhance your thinking, creativity, and writing skills.
