Chapter 1: Understanding ROCOS

In response to a query from one of our subscribers about ROCOS stars, we delve into what these intriguing entities are. ROCOS, or Radio Objects with Continuous Optical Spectra, were initially identified by Soviet astrophysicists at the Crimean Astrophysical Observatory during the 1970s.

The Special Astrophysical Observatory of the Russian Academy of Sciences conducts research on these mysterious objects. ROCOS meet two main criteria: they exhibit an optical image akin to that of a star while simultaneously serving as a radio source. Additionally, their optical spectrum is continuous, lacking the distinct lines typically associated with emission or absorption, which means they encompass all frequencies except those that are absorbed in the interstellar medium.

The absence of unique spectral lines is quite rare, as a star’s spectral fingerprint is almost as distinctive as that of a human. Currently, only around 80 ROCOS have been identified.

The lack of spectral features complicates efforts to use redshift for measuring their distances, making it unclear whether these objects are situated within our galaxy or beyond. Some scientists propose that ROCOS could be cosmic navigational beacons created by extraterrestrial civilizations, setting them apart from other celestial bodies. Notably, pulsars were once thought to be such beacons, but were later confirmed to have natural origins.

The most recent studies on ROCOS from Russia that I could locate date back to 2011, while the latest article in the Harvard archive is from 1994. The scientific community speculates that ROCOS may represent a category of white dwarfs, solar mass black holes, or blazars. Research continues, but conclusive information remains elusive, likely due to the ambiguous nature of existing studies.
