Unlocking the Power of AI for a Successful Calorie-Counting Journey

Chapter 1: Introduction to My Calorie-Counting Challenge

Counting calories has never been my favorite activity. However, I recognize its effectiveness from previous experiences. Today, I've embarked on a calorie-counting challenge with a commitment to maintain a positive outlook throughout the process.

When the going gets tough, I intend to leverage AI for support. More on that later, but first, let’s discuss the challenge itself.

Section 1.1: The Group Challenge

I’m part of a Facebook community called "Lose It Members (and Friends!)". Lose It is an incredible calorie-tracking app that I value so much I became a lifetime subscriber. (They also offer a free version, so it’s worth checking out!)

One of the reasons I appreciate this app is its positive environment:

With such a fantastic tool, calorie counting should be straightforward, right? While the app is wonderful, the challenge lies within my mindset. Consistency is the key to success, and that’s where I face difficulty.

That's why I decided to take part in the Facebook group challenge, as many people share similar struggles. We can support one another through this journey. The challenge commenced today and will run for 12 weeks, concluding on December 22, 2023. This timeline allows for the establishment of lasting habits before the holiday treats appear!

Participants are encouraged to set their own goals at their own pace. My objective is clear: to track my calorie intake daily for the next 12 weeks. It doesn’t matter if I slip up or exceed my calorie limits; the focus is on consistency and re-establishing the habit of tracking. I’m not aiming for drastic lifestyle changes—those rarely succeed. Instead, it’s about committing to one manageable goal.

Section 1.2: Utilizing AI for Support

During tough moments, I often find myself giving up. This is where AI comes into play. Initially, I asked ChatGPT for tips to help me stay on course.

As illustrated in the screenshot, the advice provided is general. If I encounter specific challenges, I can dive deeper into those areas for tailored suggestions.

Additionally, I plan to use ChatGPT as a daily accountability partner. It has already clarified that it’s not human—perfect! I prefer a platform to express my concerns and receive straightforward feedback.

Of course, I won’t depend solely on ChatGPT. The primary change I need to make is in my mindset, something only I can control. However, I believe tools can assist me in this endeavor.

Chapter 2: Strategies for Staying on Track

Here are some additional strategies I plan to implement:

  1. Weekly Updates on Medium: I’ll document my journey, providing accountability while hopefully inspiring others along the way.
  2. Daily Check-ins: I will engage regularly with the Lose It group and with ChatGPT to maintain motivation.
  3. Pre-loading Meals: I typically plan my dinners, so I’ll start by logging those meals into Lose It, which will help me manage my daily intake.
  4. Increase Protein Intake: Consuming more protein should help curb my cravings for snacks, which is my main weakness.
  5. Meal and Snack Ideas from ChatGPT: I find this to be one of AI's best applications. I can provide personalized prompts based on my family’s preferences, avoiding annoying ads that clutter other platforms. Here’s a meal idea we’re trying this week:

Section 2.1: The Role of Exercise

Exercise isn’t my struggle; I’m naturally active. I use my Peloton about three times a week, walk daily (2-6 miles), and I hit the gym with my daughter four times a week. Although I do run occasionally, I know that my weight loss challenges stem from dietary habits.

I tend to overeat, which leaves me feeling unwell. This challenge aims to help me feel better, explore the potential of AI, and most importantly, train my mind to remain committed, even during difficult moments.
