Apple's HomePod, AirPods Pro 2, and Apple TV: The Winners and Losers
Written on
Apple is set to enhance its HomePods significantly later this year, just in time for the arrival of iOS 17. This update will bring a revamped AirPlay, allowing media playback from third-party iOS applications. The ongoing rivalry between Apple and Spotify appears to ease with this change, marking a significant shift in Apple's approach.
To enable third-party app compatibility on the HomePod, developers will need to align their offerings with the SiriKit API, which facilitates voice control through Siri. The iOS 17 updates will also refine AirPlay's reliability, utilizing user listening histories to suggest media when a HomePod is nearby, thereby enhancing the overall listening experience.
Exciting Updates for AirPods Pro 2
With the rollout of iOS 17, AirPods Pro 2 are also set to receive five exciting new features that will elevate the already impressive earbuds.
- Adaptive Audio: This feature, introduced at WWDC, will intelligently merge Transparency mode and Active Noise Cancellation based on the user's surroundings, providing an optimized audio experience.
- Conversation Awareness: This innovative functionality reduces background noise while amplifying the voice of the person in front of you. When a conversation begins, whatever you were listening to will automatically lower in volume.
- Call Control: Users can now mute or unmute their voice during calls by simply pressing the stem on their AirPods, rather than disconnecting the call.
- Automatic Switching: This feature, while sometimes inconsistent, is expected to improve with an upcoming firmware update, leading to faster and more dependable connections between Apple devices.
- Personalized Volume: Leveraging machine learning, AirPods Pro 2 will adapt to listening conditions and preferences over time, aiming to protect users' hearing during prolonged use.
Additionally, a minor yet impactful update in iOS 17 will modify the wake command to simply "Siri," making interactions feel more natural.
AirPlay Expands to Hotels
Another exciting announcement from WWDC is the integration of AirPlay in select hotel chains later this year. Collaborating with LG, a leading manufacturer of in-room hotel TVs, Apple aims to ensure that the AirPlay experience in hotels mirrors that of home use. Guests will soon be able to connect their iPhone or iPad to hotel TVs by simply scanning a QR code, eliminating the need for app downloads or account logins. This functionality will be available on all LG Pro:Centric Smart Hotel TVs.
The iMac's Future
The colorful 24-inch iMac, launched in spring 2021, has remained unchanged, while other Apple devices have received updates with the M2 chip. Rumors suggest that the iMac may be placed on a three-year release cycle, with the next iteration expected to feature the new M3 chip in the following year. Although the delay makes sense in light of the M2 chip's lifecycle, it remains disappointing for fans awaiting updates.
Potential Features in the New iMac
When the iMac is finally refreshed, it may debut an exciting new feature: a built-in projector. Recent patent filings indicate that Apple could integrate a projector capable of displaying images onto nearby surfaces. This could enhance online meetings and FaceTime calls, potentially featuring gaze detection for added interactivity.
Apple TV: A Mixed Bag
Since its debut in 2018, Apple TV+ has grown into a formidable player in the streaming landscape, delivering a plethora of popular content like "Bad Sisters" and "Slow Horses." However, as the platform expands, some shows have faced cancellations, including "Dear Edward" and "Mosquito Coast." On a brighter note, several series have been renewed for additional seasons.
Apple vs. Fruit Union Suisse
In an unexpected twist, Apple is pursuing intellectual property rights for the image of a red apple, potentially impacting the 111-year-old Fruit Union Suisse, which features a similar logo. The organization's director expressed confusion over Apple's motives, emphasizing the universal nature of the apple symbol.
CarPlay Enhancements
With the update to iOS 17, CarPlay will introduce SharePlay, allowing passengers to share music with the driver’s iPhone. Siri’s interface will become more discreet, appearing as a lower third on the screen, and Apple Maps will provide enhanced information on electric vehicle charging stations along routes.
