Imagine feeling happier, sleeping better, improving your physical fitness, and even increasing your income—all within a month. And what if this transformation required only 10 to 30 seconds of your time each day?

While those few seconds might be uncomfortable, would you be willing to endure that for immediate benefits in your mental health, energy, productivity, and even finances? It's entirely feasible, as I've recently discovered.

Although cold showers may not be the most enjoyable experience, they have positively impacted my life.

The 10-Second Game Changer

Recently, I tuned into the Andrew Huberman podcast featuring former Navy SEAL Jocko Willink, where they discussed the benefits of cold showers and immersions. Huberman mentioned an astonishing statistic: cold water exposure can boost dopamine levels by 250%, comparable to the effects of nicotine or cocaine! Unlike those harmful substances, cold exposure maintains elevated dopamine levels for hours.

Motivated by these insights and my own feelings of lethargy, I decided to commit to a 30-day cold shower challenge. As I will outline, the results were quite astonishing.

I anticipated significant improvements given Huberman's claims about dopamine, but I needed to experience it firsthand.

Day 1: A New Beginning

On the first day, I struggled to get out of bed after a poor night’s sleep. Typically, I'm awake between 6 and 7 a.m., but I found myself unmotivated and sluggish. Inspired by a story about comedian Jerry Seinfeld, who splashes cold water on his face to boost his mood, I decided to start with that and build up to my first cold shower in the afternoon.

My goals were twofold: to reestablish my exercise routine and to work effortlessly on my content business. I splashed my face with cold water, and to my surprise, I felt instantly energized. After a quick coffee and snack, I went for a run, which I hadn't done in a while. To my delight, the run went well, and I even followed it with an hour of yoga.

The First Cold Shower

I felt the afternoon slump approaching, so I prepared myself for my first cold shower. I set the water to a comfortable temperature to wash, then flipped it to full cold. Counting down from 10, I braced myself and stepped under the icy water. My heart raced, and I found myself laughing uncontrollably after just 15 seconds.

This burst of energy was unprecedented; I felt invigorated and immediately returned to work with newfound motivation. I managed to complete two hours of side work and even squeezed in a gym session afterward.

Day 2: Building Momentum

I started Day 2 with another cold splash and shower, though I didn’t experience the same high as Day 1. As someone with ADHD, I adapt quickly to new stimuli, and I wondered if the absence of caffeine played a role. However, I lost 5 pounds that day—mostly water weight—suggesting that my body was beginning to respond positively.

Despite fighting off a cold, I felt happier and more social, even in situations that would typically stress me out. This was particularly striking considering my illness.

Continuing the Journey

As the days progressed, I maintained my morning splashes and cold showers, feeling more energized and productive. My mood improved, and I embraced social interactions with greater ease.

By Day 4, I had not only conquered my cold but also felt a surge of energy that enabled me to tackle various tasks effortlessly, including work and family activities.

The Power of Mental Resiliency

As I continued this challenge, I noticed that facing the discomfort of cold showers enhanced my mental toughness. I began to apply this principle to other areas of my life, allowing me to push past mental barriers.

Day 13: A Breakthrough

On Day 13, I experienced a significant leap in my health metrics. My sleep quality peaked, and my mood and energy levels soared. I completed a 7 km run, overcoming self-doubt along the way.

Final Results After 30 Days

After completing the challenge, here are the measurable changes I observed:

  • Weight: 171 lbs. (lost 2 lbs.)
  • Sleep quality: 83.33 (2.8% increase)
  • Exercise (zone minutes): 55.26 (268% increase)
  • Breaths per minute: 13.43 (4% decline)
  • Heart rate variability: 79.3 (3% increase)
  • Resting heart rate: 49.3 (essentially unchanged)
  • Mood: 76.23 (90% increase)
  • Energy: 74 (85% increase)
  • Side business earnings: $64.88 (63% increase)

While cold showers may not be enjoyable, they teach your brain to embrace discomfort. By the end of this 30-day experiment, I had transformed numerous aspects of my life. I'm eager to see what lies ahead!
