Exploring the Diminishing Returns of Personal Growth Content

Chapter 1: The Saturation of Personal Growth Content
Today, I want to delve into a topic that has been on my mind lately. While reading "Principles" by Ray Dalio, I encountered a thought-provoking quote:
"The value of information known to everyone diminishes over time." — Ray Dalio.
This statement was made in the context of investing, where widespread awareness of a strategy leads to market adjustments that undermine its efficacy.
This leads me to ponder: Does this notion hold true for platforms like Medium as well?
When I browse my "For You" section, I often find that 70% of the articles discuss personal development strategies. The headlines frequently read:
- "How to reclaim 10 hours in just 10 minutes with this tactic"
- "Outpace 95% of the population with this straightforward method"
- "6 changes that can transform your life in 6 months"
- "Remove these 4 detrimental habits immediately; they’re harming your existence"
The repetition of these themes feels overwhelming.
You and I both know the reality. We might click on these enticing titles, only to find ourselves thinking:
"Oh, I’ve seen these tips before…"
Or worse:
"Oh no, not this again; I just read it five minutes ago."
While some readers might still find value in this information, they often leave with little more than a fleeting positive comment, quickly forgetting the content afterward.
To clarify, I harbor no ill will towards those who write about these topics; I engage in similar discussions myself. My reflection is simply this: Is it still worthwhile to revisit these subjects? Or have we hit a saturation point?
We are in an age where content production is skyrocketing, especially in the realm of self-improvement. Between YouTube and Medium, the sheer volume of material is staggering.
Given this abundance, what are the odds that a reader will genuinely implement your strategies, particularly when they mirror those of countless others?
What are the chances that your insights will significantly impact someone’s life?
Honestly, I believe the likelihood is nearly zero. This question is crucial; if we aren’t making a meaningful difference, what’s the purpose of our writing?
I’d love to hear your opinions on this matter.
