For a long time, I viewed ADHD as a burden. It's frustrating when your mind races at bedtime or when you misplace your keys for the umpteenth time. However, I now recognize the value it brings to my life. Initially, when I suspected I might have ADHD, fear consumed me.

Consider my previous mindset:

"I felt something was amiss. What would my employer think? Could I lose my job? If I have ADHD, how did I excel at university? Would my partner be able to handle it? Am I truly good at my job, or will they eventually see my flaws? Do my colleagues even appreciate me?"

These thoughts were once a constant in my mind, and I suspect many of you can relate.

The truth is, I’ve come to understand that thriving with ADHD hinges on two main principles.

The first is acceptance. Acknowledge your ADHD, embrace it, and leverage it to your advantage. I have, and you can too.

Secondly, it's crucial to identify what strategies work best for you. Since everyone’s experience is unique, understanding what exacerbates your ADHD and what helps you thrive can significantly improve your life.

I've moved past these doubts, which is why I am here, sharing my journey on Medium to help others with ADHD flourish.

Not only do we generate ideas quickly, but we also excel at connecting disparate pieces of information to develop comprehensive plans at an impressive pace. You may not realize it, but your coworkers likely view you as an innovator, potentially envious of your ability to devise solutions swiftly. Organizations actively seek out individuals like you, especially during transformative phases. Your quick thinking is a valuable asset—never forget that!

Many individuals with ADHD, myself included, report a heightened sense of empathy and a genuine concern for others. While it's essential to establish boundaries, this trait is a significant asset in the workplace.

Of course, you are not obligated to be a sounding board for others' emotions, but empathy is a crucial attribute that many lack, especially in management roles. Reflect on your experiences with past supervisors—chances are, a lack of empathy contributed to their ineffectiveness.

This is a crucial point. It's well-known that individuals with ADHD often possess a sharp wit, far beyond average humor. Thanks to our rapid information processing, we can quickly find humor in situations.

This skill is rare and incredibly valuable. If you can defuse tension with a well-timed joke and, importantly, laugh at yourself, you're likely to succeed. Research indicates a correlation between humor—especially self-deprecating humor—and professional advancement.

Studies suggest that the ability to laugh at oneself contributes to greater emotional well-being. When you can make others laugh, you foster trust through shared vulnerability. And who do managers tend to promote? Those they trust.

I believe this is partly why I experienced a recent promotion. While it’s important to strive for excellence, ADHD can complicate organization.
