Rediscovering Joy: A Journey of Self-Reflection and Growth

Chapter 1: The Turning Point
A recent experience prompted me to reevaluate my life. After watching an engaging video on the Diary of a CEO channel, hosted by the charismatic Steven Bartlett, I was introduced to Marcus Buckingham. He is known for his insightful work, including the book "Love and Work: How to find what you love, love what you do, and do it for the rest of your life."
In one impactful segment of the interview, Marcus recommended an exercise that encouraged me to reflect deeply on my life's satisfaction. He suggested taking a sheet of paper and creating two columns, labeling one "LOVE" and the other "LOATH."
This exercise is straightforward: jot down everything you love and everything you loathe, whether it's related to work, personal relationships, or any other aspect of life. I conducted a comprehensive assessment and was surprised by what I found.
In all honesty, I realized that the only thing I truly disliked was managing my finances and paying taxes. However, I was troubled to discover that my "LOVE" column was rather sparse. Was I really becoming so disconnected? While I've grown accustomed to solitude, which is somewhat comforting, it also left me feeling a bit disheartened.
In lieu of a "LOATH" column, I opted for a "DON'T LIKE MUCH" section instead.
Over the next few days, I pondered my work, daily activities, and how my life had lost its vibrancy since my fiancé's tragic passing in a cycling accident two years ago.
In December 2021, a freak accident led to a broken hip, taking away many physical activities I cherished—like MMA (the injury occurred due to a mishap with a crash mat), mountain biking with my dogs, and various workout routines. This left me feeling emotionally and physically depleted.
Come on, Jan, gather yourself together!
Okay, okay! I’m getting there at my own pace.
Fortunately, I started recognizing the positives in my life:
- I am thankful for my two supportive friends of 18 years.
- I cherish my two dogs.
- I appreciate the stability my writing business provides.
- I took the time to enhance my garden, which now flourishes.
- I am in good health, and physiotherapy is aiding my recovery.
- I am grateful for my car, which is essential living in a remote village.
- My clients offer me significant autonomy.
- I can afford to nourish myself.
- I enjoy walking my dogs, even if it’s a bit uncomfortable right now.
- Working from home is a blessing; I thrive in solitude as an INFP.
- My love for my fiancé, David, remains strong—love endures even after loss.
- I value my determination and resilience, especially during my darkest moments.
While I won’t share my entire list, this gives you a glimpse of my reflections.
Conclusion
Engaging in this exercise has heightened my appreciation for life and ignited a desire to reclaim joy. Recently, I began hula hooping with a weighted hoop and using a Flow rope, which may seem silly, but it brings me joy. I listen to music and sing along during my workouts—it's my own quirky version of happiness, but it's a positive step forward.
I would love to hear how you fare if you decide to undertake this exercise. The video interview may be lengthy, but it offers valuable insights worth your time.
