Ten Transformative Insights from Writing 50 Articles on Medium

Written on

Chapter 1: Introduction to My Medium Journey

Initially, my plan was to write this piece after completing my 50th article, but various life events delayed me, and now I find myself approaching my 57th article. Despite the delay, I feel it's important to share the insights I've gained over the past nine months. Here are my ten key lessons!

Section 1.1: The Reality of Becoming a Medium Star

  1. No, I Didn’t Become a Medium Star

I must admit, I was somewhat naive. When I joined the Partner Program, I envisioned that by my 50th article, I would have achieved stardom or at least seen a substantial income. However, I quickly learned that 50 articles do not guarantee success on Medium. In fact, reaching that milestone doesn't necessarily mean that your writing will be compelling or well-structured. Renowned authors in this space often advise aspiring writers to aim for at least 100 articles before expecting significant outcomes.

Section 1.2: The Dual Nature of Networking

  1. Networking Can Be Either Your Worst Enemy or a Lovely Friend

Engaging with other writers through comments can be a double-edged sword. There were instances when I thought, “Why should I bother with this?” Yet, at other times, I found immense value in reading articles that resonated with my experiences, particularly from women who lead similar lifestyles. Networking offers a choice: you can either approach it positively or let frustration take over.

Subsection 1.2.1: The Growth of Your Writing Skills

  1. With 50 Articles, Your Writing Will Develop So.Freaking.Much

If you're eager to improve, this is the ideal platform for growth. Commit to the process, and you'll undoubtedly enhance your writing skills.

Section 1.3: The Joy of Having a Creative Outlet

  1. If You Have Often Thought About Writing Before Actually Starting, It Will Feel Amazing To Have an Outlet To Do It

Many aspiring writers, including myself, often ponder, “Why didn’t I start sooner?” Having a platform to share your thoughts and experiences is a remarkable opportunity. Embrace it and let your unique voice shine.

  1. Writing Will Help You Develop Your Tastes

As someone who has struggled with perfectionism, I’ve often overanalyzed every aspect before diving in. If you relate to this, stop overthinking your niche or audience. Just begin writing; your preferences will evolve naturally through the process.

Section 1.4: The Financial Reality of Writing

  1. My Earnings Are Nowhere Close To Where I Wanted Them To Be

For those interested in the numbers, I’ll share my earnings: nearly $24 USD as of late September. I took a slow approach to my Medium journey, posting only once a week initially due to my job constraints. However, I've recently felt more motivated to increase my output.

Section 1.5: The Start of My Newsletter Adventure

  1. Medium Helped Me Start My Newsletter and I Couldn’t Be Happier About It

As mentioned earlier, Medium has been instrumental in helping me refine my direction. It became clear that I wanted to create a newsletter focusing on my travel and remote work experiences, aimed at supporting others on a similar path. Without the inspiration from other writers and my own reflections, this project might never have come to fruition.

Section 1.6: The Challenge of Different Writing Formats

  1. Writing Short-Form Articles Is More Challenging Than Writing Long Ones!

Before reaching my 50th article, I primarily crafted long-form pieces that could take hours to complete. Recently, I began experimenting with short-form articles and discovered that they can be equally challenging. However, mastering this skill will pay off in the long run.

Section 1.7: Commitment to the Long Game

  1. If You Have Written 50 Articles, Then You Are Here For the Long Game

Reaching the milestone of 50 articles shows your persistence and discipline—qualities that indicate you are in this for the long haul. Keep up the good work!

Section 1.8: The Excitement of Continued Writing

  1. The More You Write, The More Excited About Your Writing Journey You Get

What began as a casual hobby transformed into a more profound commitment when I discovered the Partner Program. Although I initially thought it would be an easy way to earn some money, I learned that writing is a journey that requires dedication. The more I engage in it, the more my aspirations evolve, and the more thrilled I become about this writing adventure.
