Enhancements in iOS 18 Calendar: A Closer Look at Reminders

Understanding the iOS 18 Calendar

The Calendar app in iOS 18 has received updates, yet it remains a tool that neither particularly impresses nor disappoints. One notable addition is the integration of Reminders.

I rarely access the Calendar app, except when I need to add new events. I have a convenient Shortcut that helps me track our medical appointments and other potential conflicts. I run this Shortcut regularly and post reminders in various spots around the house to keep us organized.

Can We Schedule That Salad For November 8th?

Wait a moment, let me consult my calendar.

Most of my scheduling is done through Reminders, as it allows me to categorize entries into distinct lists and sections. Reminders supports tags, notes, URLs, images, and even location-based triggers, making it my preferred application for managing tasks.

So why bother with the Calendar? I could just manage medical appointments in Reminders too. It’s quite effective, possibly even more so in some aspects. However, we maintain a large desk calendar for our appointments, which we frequently reference. It seems logical to align that with the shared iOS Calendars.

Lately, I've been reconsidering if using Reminders exclusively might be more beneficial, but for the time being, I continue with my current method. The Calendar in iOS 18 allows users to view, add, delete, and modify Reminders. While this can lead to a cluttered interface, toggling the visibility of Reminders is straightforward.

Design Changes

Besides the ability to toggle Reminders on and off, the iPadOS version appears largely unchanged; if there are any modifications, I have yet to notice them. The iPhone version, however, seems to have undergone some design alterations to accommodate the integration of Reminders.

A Lackluster Update

If you've made it this far, you might be feeling underwhelmed, and it seems Apple shares this sentiment, as the Calendar is mentioned only in passing on the iOS 18 Preview page. Yes, they’ve added Reminders, but a little weather integration might have piqued my interest more. Unfortunately, Reminders didn’t spark much excitement.

Tech & Me aims to provide relatable stories about technology—how it impacts your daily life, your preferences, and your frustrations. I’m looking for that personal touch; how-to guides are welcome only when they incorporate a personal angle—no dry instructions here. When it comes to programming, it’s the same rule: without a personal perspective, it doesn’t fit the publication's ethos.
