# The Entrepreneurial Superpower: Harnessing Silence for Success

Written on

Chapter 1: The Power of a Single Word

In the realm of entrepreneurship, many believe that relentless optimism is the key to success. I, however, hold a different view. Some argue that persistence is the answer, claiming that if you dedicate enough time to a venture, it will eventually yield financial rewards. I disagree with that notion as well. Spending countless hours on an unworthy project won't make it profitable.

My experience includes dedicating extensive time to ventures that resulted in losses exceeding six figures, far more than the time I invest in successful businesses. Thus, neither optimism nor sheer persistence guarantees success in entrepreneurship.

Yet, there's one crucial element that I believe contributes significantly to my achievements—something I now refer to as my "superpower."

Four Letters and a Moment of Reflection

When discussing a new venture with my former investor, their concerns were evident, even from 3,000 miles away. After they expressed their fears, I simply replied, "Okay..."

This one-word response allowed me to process their apprehensions and decide whether their concerns were valid or could be addressed. Later, the investor praised me, saying, "You know what your superpower is? You never react."

They were correct. My ability to remain calm and composed is a deliberate choice I made after experiencing my first major startup failure. Reflecting on that loss, I realize that my overenthusiastic reaction—driven by optimism and external encouragement—led to a flawed venture that ultimately failed.

So, what’s the key? Resist impulsive emotional reactions, cherish the silence, and ensure you are the last to speak.

The Secret Behind My One-Word Reply

It didn't matter who was on the other end of the line—be it my investor, a friend, or even a stranger. I take all advice seriously, regardless of its source. I don't dismiss feedback based on the credentials of the person giving it.

Why? Because everyone offers a unique perspective. Dismissing advice simply because it’s not from someone widely recognized can lead to missed opportunities.

Ironically, many people overlook free advice but are quick to share their own opinions, regardless of their qualifications. Those who do so often miss out on valuable insights. For instance, a 16-year-old's unsolicited suggestion helped me make a decision that significantly boosted my company's revenue during a challenging time. I was open-minded enough to listen, and it paid off.

Embracing Discomfort: The Poker Face Approach

Adopting this approach, especially with loved ones, can be challenging. My fiancé, for instance, prefers quick exchanges and immediate feedback, while I favor thoughtful reflection. I understand that my initial reactions may not be my most informed, so I choose to embrace the discomfort of silence rather than respond impulsively.

Let’s draw a parallel to poker. When engaging in discussions, maintaining a neutral expression prevents others from gauging your reactions. This allows them to share their unfiltered thoughts without feeling influenced by your responses.

I prefer raw, unmediated opinions over those tailored to what others think I want to hear. The authenticity of their insights is what truly matters.

Encouraging Self-Reflection in Conversations

You may have seen detectives use prolonged silence to elicit confessions from suspects. This psychological tactic can also be applied in discussions. Allowing others the space to express themselves can lead to deeper insights.

Many conversations today are influenced by assumptions about what the other party believes. I've witnessed friends alter their opinions based on external cues, which highlights the importance of creating an environment where honesty thrives.

Listening is a vital entrepreneurial skill. You have ample time to share your views, but opportunities to listen are often fleeting. Why rush to respond when you can gain valuable insights by simply being present?

Your Silence is Your Strength

The one-word response, delivered calmly, creates a filter that allows diverse and unconventional opinions to surface. If you fail to appreciate the power of silence, you may be the very barrier to your entrepreneurial growth.
