Maximizing Your Time: Aligning Daily Actions with Your Values

Understanding the Value of Time

How do you allocate your time during the day? Does it reflect what you genuinely cherish? If there’s a disconnect, how can you adjust your habits to better align with your values?

Do your daily activities align with your core values? Or does your time slip away, leaving you with a sense of unfulfilled aspirations? Perhaps you wish to spend more moments with your children or tackle household chores?

I was inspired by a quote from Joe Biden: “Don’t tell me what you value; show me your budget, and I’ll tell you what you value.” Regardless of differing opinions, this statement is impactful: our financial choices often reveal our true priorities. The same principle applies to how we spend our time.

Where does the time go?

I remember numerous clients who claimed that family was their highest priority, yet they dedicated countless hours to work, often sacrificing weekends. Similarly, friends expressed a desire to save for a home, yet they frequently indulged in dining out.

This isn’t a judgment on how you allocate your resources; rather, it’s a reflection of our shared human experience. We often experience a disconnect between our intentions and our actions—our words don’t always align with our deeds.

Identifying Your Core Values

To assess your time management, it’s crucial to determine what you truly value. So, what matters most to you?

  • Family?
  • Community?
  • Reading?
  • Writing?
  • Success?
  • Sailing?
  • Studying?
  • Hard work?
  • Financial stability?

Take a moment to reflect on how you spend a typical day.

Once you identify your priorities, scrutinize how your time is allocated throughout your days and weekends. Are you investing time in family, work, or education?

If your current goal is to achieve workplace success, it’s understandable that your focus might be there. Or maybe you're deeply engaged in completing a writing project, so much so that hours seem to evaporate.

I took the initiative to analyze how I spent my time each day.

Assessing Your Daily Routine

What does your average day look like? What percentage is spent on activities that genuinely bring you joy? Consider how much time is consumed by social media, idle chit-chat, or binge-watching shows.

If you’re content with your routine, that’s perfectly fine. But if you’re feeling dissatisfied, it may be time for a reassessment.

How do you begin your mornings? Are you in a rush to work or dropping off kids at school, perhaps grabbing breakfast on the go? Let’s take stock:

  • What are your daily rituals?
  • What essentials do you need? Coffee, perhaps?
  • What’s the rhythm of your day? Do you feel rushed or deliberate?
  • Are you setting aside time to nourish your mind, body, and soul?
  • Does your day reflect what you truly value?
  • What can you cut out of your daily routine?

Evolving Life Priorities

As children grow, they may no longer occupy your time as they did when they were younger. Life evolves, and so do priorities.

A few years back, I conducted a personal inventory and decided to eliminate “time-wasters” such as social media, excessive self-reflection, and interactions with chronic complainers.

I cannot forgo intimacy, meditation, exercise, and writing. I’ve intentionally structured my life around my core values by being mindful of how I spend my time.

Establishing Morning Rituals

The way you begin your morning can significantly influence your entire day! My morning rituals, which include exercise and meditation, are essential. Connecting with my partner is also vital, no matter the circumstances. Sharing similar values makes navigating life much easier.

Your life is a reflection of your daily habits, shaped by how you choose to spend each day.

Be Adaptable

Avoid approaching your day rigidly, as if you are a drill sergeant. Embrace flexibility. Allow your schedule to adapt, but remain intentional about how you desire to spend your life.

Weekends are meant for relaxation—always with coffee in bed. Enjoy your week!
