Understanding the Journey to Sobriety
Embarking on the path to sobriety can be challenging, and having the right guidance is essential. Here, we explore vital strategies to help you stay committed to your alcohol-free journey.
I made three earnest attempts to eliminate alcohol from my life, with the first two attempts ending in failure. What changed on my third try? It was a transformation in my mindset.
Initially, I believed I could succeed based solely on the knowledge I acquired from various books on sobriety. While I was able to resist temptations, such as the enticing Cosmopolitans at dinners with my husband, I eventually realized that mere willpower has its limits.
At first, I didn’t see myself as a non-drinker. Even though I had stopped consuming alcohol and was enjoying non-alcoholic beverages, my self-perception hadn’t shifted. I had to evolve from merely being someone trying to quit to embracing the identity of a non-drinker. This change in self-perception was crucial for my success.
The belief that I, Diana, am a non-drinker became a cornerstone of my sobriety. Although it may seem like a minor adjustment, it was indeed transformative. This affirmation of identity is the most critical piece of advice I can offer.
Finding Support in Your Sobriety Journey
Support can take many forms as you pursue sobriety. My approach was somewhat unconventional, relying heavily on literature that focused on quitting drinking. Among these, one book stood out as particularly beneficial: Your Six Week Plan — Join the Sober Revolution by Sarah Turner and Lucy Rocca. This daily journal provided daily tips and a mood-tracking system, proving to be an invaluable resource.
Additionally, I shared my progress with a friend during our daily dog walks. Although she drank occasionally, her encouragement served as a significant boost. I also participated in SMART Recovery meetings, which provided a supportive, non-religious environment where open sharing was encouraged. These varied forms of support complemented my reading and helped me stay on track.
Establishing a Routine and Purpose
In the final years of my drinking, I enjoyed the freedom of retirement, but I soon discovered that this freedom led to a lack of structure in my days. My daily routine revolved around morning walks and sporadic gym sessions, but I often found myself bored.
The highlight of my day was cocktail hour, which I eagerly anticipated. However, I recognized the need for change after my first sober day. I expanded my exercise routine, incorporating more hiking and weightlifting.
Then I discovered pickleball, a sport that transformed my daily life. I also began to enhance my diet and hydrate more. Encouraged by friends, I started a blog, which became a delightful surprise as I discovered my writing abilities. Writing became a new purpose that filled my afternoons.
Now, two years later, I’ve published my first piece on Medium. My days are now rich and fulfilling, leaving no room for thoughts of drinking.
Creating a Plan for Sobriety
It’s essential to have a structured plan for maintaining sobriety. From day one, develop a schedule that sets you up for success.
Tailoring Strategies to Your Needs
What worked for me may not resonate with everyone. We all have unique circumstances and needs. Here are two additional tips that might prove useful:
- Change Your Environment: If you frequent bars or social settings centered around drinking, consider stepping away. Sobriety won’t flourish in environments that promote alcohol consumption.
- Evaluate Your Relationships: If your friendships are primarily based around drinking and lack support for your sober journey, it may be time to reevaluate those connections. True friends will uplift you and support your choices.
Seek out individuals who can accompany you on your sobriety journey, whether through Alcoholics Anonymous, online support groups, or other avenues. Be intentional with your time, starting each day on a positive note, and surround yourself with supportive people who believe in your transformation into a non-drinker.
You are capable of this change; trust in yourself.
