# The Necessity of AI Wearables: Are They Worth the Hype?

Written on

Chapter 1: A Fascination with AI Wearables

When I first encountered discussions about AI wearables on Twitter several months ago, I found myself captivated. My immediate thought was, "This is incredibly exciting!" However, it soon prompted deeper questions. Just how useful and essential are AI wearables?

Could we be witnessing yet another instance of excessive hype surrounding a new product that might quickly fade into irrelevance? While the combination of advanced AI software and stylish hardware is certainly appealing at first glance, do these devices offer anything that our smartphones and computers cannot? Are they genuinely worth wearing?

Consider the Humane AI pin, a compact, screen-less device designed to be clipped to clothing. It aims to seamlessly integrate into daily activities, enhancing real-world awareness. This AI Pin utilizes voice, gesture, and touch commands to access services like search, translation, and navigation. Its price tag? A steep $699.

Next is Tab—a round AI Companion that learns about you by actively engaging in conversations. It gathers context unique to each user, allowing it to provide responses that are genuinely personalized. This device is priced at $600.

Lastly, we have the Rewind Pendant, which resembles a necklace and captures conversations, transcribing them while storing data locally on the user's phone. It also summarizes and retains what the user sees and hears, much like Tab. This device has garnered enthusiastic feedback, with comparisons to the all-encompassing technology depicted in the Black Mirror episode, "The Entire History of You." Its final price remains undisclosed.

The allure of a pocket-sized gadget functioning as a digital assistant is undeniable. Yet, despite their appeal, the question remains: are they worth the investment?

Section 1.1: Privacy Concerns with AI Wearables

Although some may downplay the significance of privacy issues, the reality is that sharing sensitive personal data with an AI raises critical questions. Who has ownership of this data? In what ways is it utilized, and who can access it?

Usability also presents a challenge. Picture yourself on a crowded train—how straightforward would it be to use voice commands or gestures without disturbing others or feeling self-conscious? Additionally, there's the risk of having your private conversations overheard or your screen viewed by strangers.

Engaging in back-and-forth voice interactions could feel awkward and impractical. Users might revert to their smartphones for convenience. While earbuds can help mitigate some of these issues, one must consider the implications of numerous individuals using AI wearables in close quarters.

What would a date be like with someone sporting an AI wearable? How would that affect the dynamic?

Section 1.2: The Overload of Technology

Are we simply complicating our already overstimulated lives with another device to manage, track our steps, and analyze our behaviors? For many, the answer could be a firm "no."

My current tech setup includes AirPods, an iPhone, an iPad, a MacBook, and Snap Spectacles for capturing moments on the go.

When it comes to the integration of AI into wearable tech, I lean towards smart glasses like Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses or Snap Spectacles, as well as wireless headphones like AirPods. Why? Because they are already part of our daily lives, providing a seamless and unobtrusive experience.

People are often drawn to new technology, but how long will the allure of standalone AI wearables last before individuals realize they may not be as revolutionary as initially thought?

Chapter 2: Cost and Accessibility of AI Wearables

Not everyone can afford these devices. With starting prices around $600, any product must deliver enough value to justify the expense.

While prices may decrease as the technology becomes more mainstream, this largely depends on consumer demand. We should also consider that we may be overestimating the number of people who desire standalone AI wearables, particularly those that merely analyze speech.

I find the idea of completely eliminating screens intriguing. Smartphones already offer a comprehensive package: voice commands, keyboards, instant visuals, and detailed maps. A laser-display device might seem like an attractive addition but could also feel like a regression. Moreover, visual learning is often more effective, making smartphones the superior option.

Section 2.1: The Smartphone vs. Wearable Debate

Deciding whether an AI assistant should be integrated into our smartphones or exist as a separate device is a nuanced discussion.

From a hardware perspective, one must ask: why does it need to be a distinct gadget? Smartphones provide advantages in terms of established technology, widespread availability, and processing capabilities. Ultimately, the choice between mobile apps and AI wearables is a personal preference.

Apple, with its extensive hardware and software ecosystem, has a unique opportunity to innovate in this space.

While AI wearables offer an intriguing glimpse into the future, the lack of compelling use cases raises concerns. Before investing in the latest gadget, it’s essential to assess your needs and existing technology. Sometimes, the most valuable AI companion is already within reach—your smartphone.
