A Personal Selection of Philosophy Books to Explore in 2022

Chapter 1: The Importance of Reading Philosophy
Why delve into philosophy? The impact of philosophical thought has shaped humanity for millennia, influencing our languages, scientific understanding, ethical standards, and cultural frameworks. Engaging with philosophy allows us to grasp how language molds our reality and to reflect on our thought processes.
This compilation features authors and texts for various reasons, including some of the most popular philosophy books ever written, alongside suggestions from contemporary thinkers. The selections stem from my personal readings and sources like Gregory Sadler's recommendations from Stoicism Today magazine.
Section 1.1: Noteworthy Philosophy Bestsellers
According to Barnes & Noble, two of the top-selling philosophy books are by authors from different eras: one from ancient times and the other from the modern era.
Meditations
by Marcus Aurelius
Despite being penned nearly 2,000 years ago, the stoic philosophy articulated by Marcus Aurelius remains strikingly relevant. His reflections on the human experience resonate as profoundly today as they did in the 2nd century. Whether you’re drawn to Western philosophy or curious why this text continues to captivate readers, Meditations serves as an essential guide for those seeking wisdom and resilience.
I consumed this work through an audiobook format, and my only regret was not being able to annotate the numerous insightful passages.
The Daily Stoic: 366 Meditations on Wisdom, Perseverance, and the Art of Living
by Ryan Holiday and Stephen Hanselman
Yes, another stoic philosophy book. I acknowledge that this article may not be entirely unbiased, but I firmly believe that stoicism holds significant relevance in today’s world. In this book, Holiday and Hanselman offer ways to enhance our worldview and explore new avenues of thought and behavior. This is crucial since, according to Stoic beliefs, many of our challenges stem not from external events but from our perceptions and reactions to them.
Section 1.2: Introductory Philosophy Texts
The Enchiridion
by Epictetus
Known as the Enchiridion, this work consists of brief chapters filled with teachings on confronting and overcoming life's challenges. It stands among my top five ancient Roman texts. Epictetus, who faced his share of hardships—including a period of slavery—teaches us to focus on what we can control rather than fretting over the uncontrollable.
On the Shortness of Life
by Seneca
Seneca requires little introduction, as he is one of the most practical authors regarding Stoic philosophy. His insights have even shed light on the negative impacts of social media on our lives. In On the Shortness of Life, Seneca argues that our lives are not inherently short; rather, we have plenty of time if used wisely. One of his notable lessons is to only lend your time to others if you are assured of its return.
Chapter 2: Contemporary Philosophical Insights
The first video, "The 10 Best Books I Read In 2022," highlights impactful literary works that can inspire personal growth and understanding.
The Revolt of the Masses
by José Ortega y Gasset
In this influential text, the Spanish philosopher Ortega y Gasset asserts that every civilization maintains a delicate balance between individual autonomy and societal dependence. Cooperation is the essential glue that binds the increasingly intricate structures of modern society, making this book a must-read for understanding contemporary dynamics.
Walden
by Henry David Thoreau
Thoreau chronicles his experiences over two years, two months, and two days living in a self-built cabin near a pond in Walden Woods, Massachusetts. He reflects on self-sufficiency and a lifestyle free from governmental constraints. The text is a timeless exploration of simplicity, offering valuable lessons on living frugally and focusing on what truly matters.
The second video, "8 Philosophy Books for Beginners," introduces essential philosophical texts for those new to the subject.
