The Silent Struggle for Information: An American Dilemma

Written on

Chapter 1: The Veil of Ignorance

In this modern age, we often find ourselves unaware of the vast knowledge that exists beyond our immediate grasp. We live in a state of confusion, not fully aware of what we know or don’t know.

As I find comfort in the presence of my kitten, who playfully invites me to join her in slumber, I remind myself of the importance of jotting down my reflections. Documenting the bizarre and absurd experiences in my life often takes longer than the events themselves, and I can't help but think that this slow process is intentional.

The current societal structure thrives as long as we continue to support a deteriorating system that seeks to dominate our finances, actions, thoughts, and relationships. Those in power have successfully quelled any cries for justice or acknowledgment of mistreatment. The disapproval of complaints has fostered a sense of complacency among us. We search for validation of our feelings, yet the silence from those around us leads us to question our sanity.

Initially, I wrote solely for myself, aware that few would resonate with my words. It seemed that most people preferred the comfort of a manufactured persona rather than engaging with genuine thoughts. Medium became my personal archive, a digital diary where I could express myself outside the confines of failing technology. Despite the overwhelming noise of society, there are still individuals eager for knowledge, and those are the readers I wish to connect with, even if I don’t write with them in mind.

Recently, I came across an article discussing censorship in our society, which resonated with my thoughts. It highlighted that while many information sources are available, one must first be aware of them. To educate ourselves about any topic, whether it's the JFK assassination or learning to play the guitar, we must recognize what we don't know.

Earlier today, I searched for "customer service advocate," hoping to find a resource to assist me in dealing with the multitude of companies that seem intent on exploiting me without subjecting myself to frustrating customer service calls. Google presented an overwhelming number of resources about becoming a customer service advocate, yet none addressed my actual needs.

Google has changed over time. In the '90s, a search would yield a million results, and you could sift through them all. Now, it offers only a curated selection, often omitting the most relevant information. What happened to those countless results? Why are they hidden? This subtle form of censorship restricts access to valuable information, making it increasingly difficult to discover new insights.

If we lack the right keywords, Google limits our search results, providing information based solely on its criteria, which is likely influenced by our previous searches. The information we encounter is narrowing, and we must not dismiss our suspicions about this being merely an algorithmic glitch. This is a core feature of their design—an intentional barrier to knowledge.

Imagine trying to learn Spanish while only knowing the word "hola." Google's algorithms might exclude all Spanish content, effectively blocking access to the information you seek. Tech companies seem to be dissuading our natural curiosity, making learning a frustrating endeavor.

In the past, I pushed the boundaries of knowledge, discovering websites and revisiting them, only to encounter the dreaded "404 file not found" error. This occurred often enough to fuel my desire to explore further, blurring the lines between conventional and subversive knowledge acquisition.

I often wonder what information I might possess that is deemed dangerous or unacceptable by those in authority. The act of "living and learning" has become a rebellious pursuit. After decades of exploration, everyday distractions led me to abandon my quest for knowledge.

It seems I must have ruffled some feathers among powerful entities, earning a spot on a non-existent list of individuals to be monitored, perhaps even silenced. I can't pinpoint what specific knowledge could be problematic, but it appears there is a fear that I might share it with the world.

As I ponder this paradox—the refusal of information from those who could aid me—I find myself drawn back to the comfort of my kitten, ready to surrender to sleep once more.

Wake me when clarity returns to our world.
