Understanding the Complex Nature of the Self: A Deep Dive
Written on
Chapter 1: The Dual Roles of the Self
The concept of self encompasses two primary roles: the active self and the guilty self, referred to as Nafs-E-Ammara and Nafs-E-Lawamma, respectively. The body and soul collaborate to manifest actions. When the Ammara performs its duties, the Lawamma becomes activated.
The Lawamma serves to introduce conflict and confusion, often assigning blame. Actions seem distant as every thought passes through both Ammara and Lawamma.
Contradictions can be observed in even the most trivial actions and thoughts. The essence of choice is entwined within these contradictions. As soon as a negative intention arises, the Lawamma resists it, while the Ammara entices the individual. The character that prevails in this internal struggle ultimately dictates the outcome. The defeated character grows stronger and seeks retribution once the decision is made.
Following an act spurred by the Ammara, the Lawamma induces a profound sense of guilt characterized by shame, blame, and regret.
As higher thoughts and ideas begin to emerge, a new character, the teasing self, starts to develop. This self possesses an extraordinary ability to mock, laugh at, and critically assess self-worth, which is often an illusion. This evolution is subtle and gradual, stemming from self-awareness, and can sometimes manifest in cynical individuals.
Section 1.1: The Emergence of Higher Selves
After extensive training and mastery of virtuous qualities, a fourth aspect of the self emerges, known as the self-satisfied self (Nafs-E-Mutmainna). This self embodies contentment and is free from anxiety; it represents the self of a believer. It stands as the most advanced and enlightened aspect of the self.
The existence of this self is deeply intertwined with the divine support from Allah and the love for the Holy Prophet. Without this connection, only the teasing self can develop, often seen in the cynical behaviors of individuals battling addiction.
