After a lifelong struggle with my own ego, I've learned one crucial lesson: the best strategy for survival is to avoid falling into the alligator's mouth altogether.
You can identify your ego by the frequent use of words like "I," "me," and "mine." This language signifies a separate self that is disconnected from your higher consciousness.
Paramahansa Yogananda, a revered Indian yogi, explained that the ego comprises our identification with thoughts, emotions, and bodily sensations. It leads us to believe we are merely our bodies, minds, and feelings, overlooking our inherent spiritual nature.
How is the Ego Similar to an Alligator?
While the behavior of alligators is generally well-known, let’s explore how this understanding parallels our egos:
- Territorial Nature: Both the ego and alligators exhibit territoriality and self-interest. The ego cleverly defends its dominion, viewing your life as its playground and resisting any changes that threaten its power.
- Separation: Alligators can swiftly separate you from your physical being. Similarly, the ego creates a distinct sense of self from birth, which can hinder your soul's expression. Meditation can help tame this aspect of yourself.
- Shadow Habitats: Alligators dwell in murky swamps, dangerous and unpredictable environments. The ego operates similarly, lurking in the shadows of our minds and past actions, waiting to derail our progress.
In essence, the alligator symbolizes the destructive forces that spiritual seekers must confront, with the ego often serving as the primary obstacle. However, understanding your witness can be a vital tool in overcoming these challenges.
Chapter 2: The Role of the Witness
Yogananda described the witness as the aspect of our consciousness that observes thoughts and feelings without attachment or judgment. It allows us to gain clarity and insight into our true selves, enabling us to see through the ego's facade.

Many individuals grapple with childhood traumas, which can be addressed through therapy and emotional understanding. David R. Hawkins, in his book "Power vs. Force," provides a framework for navigating emotional states, helping individuals transition from lower emotions to more empowering feelings.
He categorizes emotions from shame and guilt at the lower end to love, joy, and enlightenment at the higher end. Hawkins advises acknowledging your emotions without judgment to facilitate this upward movement. Understanding the root cause of your feelings is crucial but be cautious—revisiting trauma can sometimes trap you in the alligator’s jaws.
Hawkins suggests avoiding attempts to leapfrog to higher emotions; instead, ascend one step at a time, like climbing a ladder.
Chapter 4: Steering Clear of the Alligator
If you find yourself entangled with the alligator, don’t despair. There is always a way out. Use your witness to reconnect with your inner self.
Remember, the ego serves a protective purpose in our lives. We can also appreciate the lessons it teaches us about discovering our true nature.
Learning to focus our personal power is essential for creating the life we desire. When fear arises, recognize that love is the antidote. If reaching for love feels too distant, aim for relaxation or calmness instead.
