The Essential Role of Electricity in Our Daily Lives

Chapter 1: Understanding Electricity Anxiety
Have you ever felt a nagging worry about the availability of electricity? This unsettling feeling can linger wherever you go, especially when interacting with devices that require a plug or battery—something we all encounter daily.
This term, "electricity anxiety," emerged as I struggled with my online business, which was failing to generate any income. Frequent power outages can cripple any venture that relies on the internet. The inability to respond promptly to customers leads to frustration, and the typical excuse of "Sorry, the electricity went out" only exacerbates the situation.
Even commuting to work was challenging! No power equaled no work, and no work meant no pay! The slightest breeze, a minor drizzle, or even a sunny day could result in hours without electricity. Why bother trying to achieve anything?
Experiencing electricity intermittently only deepened the frustration. I couldn't even start a new Netflix series without being interrupted by a power cut. The basic tasks of laundry became daunting, especially on rainy days. This constant anxiety felt inescapable.
The sensation of losing something once taken for granted is akin to a sighted person losing their vision. You know what you're missing, and that can be torturous.
Over time, however, this anxiety began to fade—not due to any improvements, but because I simply resigned myself to the situation. When power was out, I opted for a book or a nap. My brother, on the other hand, would become increasingly frustrated, believing electricity should be a right rather than a privilege. In many ways, he was correct; it has evolved into a fundamental necessity.
The days when electricity was seen as a luxury are now behind us. We are so reliant on it that its absence reveals how helpless we can feel without it.
Upon arriving in the UK, I would gaze at the rain outside, and those familiar feelings would resurface. Despite knowing the power supply was stable, the sight of rain would drain my energy. Sharing this experience with others often led them to view me as naïve. Yet anyone who has faced such challenges would understand the impact it leaves on one's psyche.
No matter how intelligent or educated one might be, prolonged adversity can leave deep scars on the mind.
Now, two years into my life in the UK, I realize just how dependent I have become on electricity. The challenges in South Africa pale in comparison to what I would face here without power and its conveniences. Electricity has transformed from a mere convenience to an absolute necessity.
We have woven our lives so tightly into the fabric of the power grid that we often forget how critical it is for our survival and daily activities. As we face harsh winters and sweltering summers, we find ourselves devoid of traditional survival skills.
Electricity has become vital in maintaining the infrastructure of our increasingly populated cities. As we consume more energy, the need for reliable power sources becomes even more pressing. This raises a crucial question: Why are we neglecting our most efficient and clean source of energy? Why are Western nations decommissioning nuclear power plants while Eastern countries continue to invest heavily in them?
