Exploring the Depths of Friendship and Its Importance

Chapter 1: The Essence of Friendship
In English, the term ‘friend’ encompasses a wide range of people we’ve encountered throughout our lives, from our closest confidants to casual acquaintances from high school years ago. However, I believe we should delve deeper into the concept of friendship itself.
Recently, I returned to Amsterdam after spending two months in my beautiful homeland. The city feels grey and chilly compared to the warm Australian sunshine I enjoyed. Despite not experiencing the harsh winter, my absence from the sun made me question my choice: why am I here in Amsterdam?
As a single individual working remotely and a lover of nature, I pondered my motivations. Ultimately, the answer lies in the incredible relationships I've built here—friendships that are profound enough to define, ground, and nurture me.
Having traveled extensively and lived across four continents, I’ve encountered many remarkable individuals and created countless cherished memories. Nevertheless, not every connection qualifies as a true friendship. Genuine friendship demands mutual respect and dedication.
Friendship is a deliberate choice. It is more than mere fondness; it involves a willingness to support one another. Authentic friendships require ongoing effort and patience. The most rewarding connections give us a sense of being truly seen, heard, and understood.
As Esther Perel wisely noted, “Love and commitment and intimacy don’t just belong to the world of romantic couples.” They also exist in the realm of friendship.
During my time in Australia, I rekindled relationships with some of my oldest and dearest friends—people who uplift my spirit simply by being themselves. Typically, I need considerable time to recharge after social gatherings, but with these friends, my energy feels renewed rather than depleted.
Now, back in Amsterdam, I am reminded of the strength of the friendships I have here. These bonds have weathered job changes, haircuts, marriages, relocations, grief, heartbreak, and every challenge life presents. The comfort and security these enduring friendships provide are invaluable.
Historically, society has emphasized family as our primary relationships, often assuming that blood ties inherently surpass the intimacy and unconditional love fostered through friendships. I challenge this perspective. If ‘family’ denotes our closest circle, then my friends truly are my family.

Chapter 2: Rekindling Old Bonds
During my stay in Australia, I experienced the joy of reconnecting with friends who have been a part of my life for years.
The first video, "An Ode To Friendship," beautifully captures the essence of camaraderie and its significance in our lives. It highlights how friendships enrich our existence and provide a strong foundation of support.
