BeReal, a French social media platform established in 2020 and introduced to the U.S. market in July 2022, is often referred to as the "anti-Instagram." The premise is straightforward: users receive notifications at random times once a day, giving them a two-minute window to capture and share photos using both their front and back cameras.
The goal is to present life in its authentic form through unfiltered images. Essentially, it provides an opportunity for genuine expression. This initiative aligns with the growing critique of social media’s unrealistic portrayals and their detrimental effects on mental well-being.
Indeed, it can be challenging to see others living out experiences we desire, particularly for younger audiences. Adolescents are especially affected by social media as they navigate their identities and strive for acceptance. It often takes time for them to establish boundaries and seek out positive, educational content that enhances their self-image.
Social media is frequently scrutinized for its adverse societal effects. Many individuals become preoccupied with keeping up with fleeting trends, purchasing items that may come at great human or environmental costs, or visiting popular "Instagrammable" locations, often harming those spaces in the process.
Just this past weekend, I discovered a selfie studio opened in my local shopping center. What does it entail? A spacious room filled with colorful backdrops designed for photos. While it offers an affordable option for those seeking professional-looking settings, it detracts from the artistry inherent in photography.
The essence of photography lies in selecting the perfect backdrop and capturing the moment artfully. Both professionals and amateurs can perceive and document life without intruding on it.
In today’s world, social media has turned many into aspiring photographers and video creators. At times, it’s still a challenge for me to remember that the images I encounter do not always represent reality. We typically share our successes and highlights rather than our struggles. Social media seems to have shifted from fostering genuine connections to showcasing curated lives and monetized content.
What sets BeReal apart is its emphasis on authenticity. It’s not about projecting a polished version of oneself for the world to see; rather, it focuses on sharing real moments with familiar faces. There are no influencers, no brand promotions, and no ubiquitous trending sounds—just you, in your truest form.
