Finding Balance: Managing Chronic Pain While Writing

Written on

Chapter 1: The Struggle with Chronic Pain

Chronic pain is a frustrating reality that many face, particularly when it comes to tasks like writing. My journey with persistent back pain has been ongoing for over two decades, and while my experience may not be as severe as others dealing with conditions like fibromyalgia or arthritis, it has still had a profound impact on my life.

A significant incident occurred after a workout at Idaho State University, where I remember feeling my back tighten painfully just hours after a set of leg presses. The discomfort continued to plague me, making simple activities, such as attending classes, torturous.

Over the years, I've strained my back numerous times, often during everyday activities, from playing with my daughter to routine tasks like cleaning carpets. Physical labor has not been my friend.

Throughout this time, I’ve sought various treatments, including visits to chiropractors and a trial session of acupuncture, which provided some relief. Recently, I have been attending chiropractic appointments weekly, and while progress has been made, an unexpected setback occurred this past Sunday.

Chapter 1.1: The Setback

I was feeling optimistic about my recovery until Sunday when I took my dog, Libby, for a quick car trip. She loves her outings, especially when the weather is nice. After picking up groceries, I thought I could manage holding Libby with one hand while carrying the bags with the other. However, hours later, I felt the familiar tightness in my lower back return.

I attempted my usual stretches and went to bed hopeful, but upon waking, the pain had intensified. Despite my best intentions to rest, I found myself doing chores around the house, feeling guilty for asking my daughter, who was busy with her studies, to help.

Chapter 1.2: Coping Mechanisms

Despite the pain, I pushed through my responsibilities, including meal prep and cleaning. I figured picking up a pizza would ease the burden, but it also contributed to my discomfort.

By Thursday, I had spent days trying to manage the pain with ice packs and a vibrating lumbar pad. Writing became increasingly challenging, as chronic pain impacts not just physical tasks but cognitive ones as well. Focusing on my work was arduous, and I found myself easily distracted.

Chapter 2: Acknowledging Limits

As I continued to navigate the challenges of pain, I realized that I needed to be more mindful of my limits. I often push myself too hard, believing I can power through discomfort. However, it's essential to recognize when to take a step back and allow myself to heal.

I’m determined to change my approach moving forward. It’s crucial to communicate my struggles to those around me, especially my wife, and to prioritize my health over stubbornness. Chronic pain should not dictate my writing or my life.

In closing, if you’re also dealing with chronic pain, know that you’re not alone. It’s important to listen to your body, respect your limits, and keep creating when possible. Together, we can navigate this journey.
