Navigating the Realities of Writing on Medium: A Candid Perspective

Chapter 1: The Illusion of Quick Success
When contemplating the prospect of earning money through writing on Medium, it's essential to approach it with a clear and rational mindset. Recently, I stumbled upon an article claiming that one could earn $3,000 monthly by writing full-time on the platform. A quick glance at Medium’s homepage reveals a plethora of articles about achieving financial success through writing. However, based on my experience, such claims can be misleading.
Having been an enthusiastic writer for three to four years, I regularly publish content on Medium. To many, I’m considered a writer, yet I’ve encountered numerous full-time writers who are struggling. A common theme among these individuals is the unrealistic expectation that they can attain literary fame or success by merely penning a handful of articles. Some have dedicated excessive time and energy, even quitting their day jobs, which has negatively impacted their personal lives.
While it's true that we live in an era where the Internet has revolutionized content creation, making it possible for some to achieve overnight fame, the notion that anyone can effortlessly thrive as a writer is exaggerated. Many aspiring content creators, like a friend of mine who devoted a year to making YouTube videos, have garnered thousands of followers but seen little to no financial return. Similarly, many writers on Medium report long spells without income. Their experiences serve as a reminder that success in self-media requires a level-headed approach.
The prevalent focus on success stories often overshadows the countless others who struggle or fail. It's a fallacy to believe that writing just a few pieces will automatically lead to wealth and recognition. Thus, it’s crucial for newcomers aiming for full-time writing careers to maintain a realistic perspective.
Chapter 2: Embracing a Balanced Approach
Despite my passion for writing and my active presence on Medium and my blog, I have no immediate plans to pursue it as a full-time career. Writing remains my cherished hobby, and I approach it as a side project. I believe in gradual growth and the importance of honing my skills while steadily building my audience on Medium and Twitter.
I have no intentions of leaving my job for at least the next three to five years. Furthermore, I acknowledge the inherent risks of relying solely on a platform like Medium, which could face challenges similar to those of Yahoo. If, in a few years, I manage to build a substantial following and my income surpasses that of my current job, I would consider making writing my primary focus.
Perhaps my approach seems overly cautious, but there’s merit in being prudent. What are your thoughts on this? I invite you to follow my journey, engage with my articles, and share your insights. If you find value in my perspective, please consider sharing it on Facebook and Twitter.
