Understanding Your Audience: Transforming Your Writing Approach

Written on

Chapter 1: Who Are You Writing For?

Have you ever paused to consider who your intended audience is when you write? It's easy to convince yourself that your writing is purely for your own benefit, but that's a misconception. The true measure of your work's worth lies in the perception of others.

Your Writing Journey Begins

Most of us learned to write in an academic environment, where we composed essays and submitted them for grading. The feedback would come days or even weeks later, often accompanied by a score. Unfortunately, this method tends to cultivate a rather dull and formal writing style. The truth is, your teacher was obliged to read your assignments, regardless of their level of engagement. In the real world, however, readers won't expend their time on writing that fails to captivate them.

Writing Beyond Grades

As David McCullough wisely stated, "Writing is thinking. To write well is to think clearly." This is the essence of why we should aspire to write—to sharpen our thinking skills. Reflecting on my own experience, I often question why this fundamental lesson wasn’t emphasized during my education. Understanding this concept could be incredibly beneficial for young writers.

Avoid Journaling in Your Blog

It's essential to stop treating your blog as a personal diary. Your random musings and unrefined thoughts belong in a private journal, not in a public forum. Readers are not interested in your day-to-day experiences or disorganized reflections. Instead, they seek meaningful content.

The Reader's Role

As writers, we may view ourselves as the central figures in our narratives, but the reality is that the reader holds that position. The reader decides whether your writing is engaging or not. It's crucial that they find value in what you present. What may seem irrelevant to one group could resonate deeply with another. Identifying your target audience is vital.

Shifting Expectations

It's important to recognize that readers won't engage with your work simply because you've invested time and energy into it. Unlike your teacher, who was obligated to read your essays, the average reader will disengage if the content does not hold their interest. Your readers do not owe you their attention. Therefore, it's essential to be thankful for each reader and strive to deliver valuable content tailored to them.

Writing with Intent

A helpful strategy is to envision a specific reader while crafting your piece. Focus on one individual rather than trying to appeal to everyone. As Mike Nappa articulated, "If you want to appeal to the masses, make sure you appeal to the one." This is an excellent reminder for aspiring writers, including myself. Share your personal challenges and insights, but do so with the reader's interests in mind.
