Unlocking the Secrets to Living Your Best Life: A Journey

Written on

Chapter 1: The Quest for a Fulfilling Life

"How can we truly maximize our existence?" my colleague often pondered. This was his favorite inquiry, particularly concerning what he termed “the championship quarter” — the vibrant years between 50 and 75 when we are ideally still vigorous enough to embrace life’s adventures.

We would gather every few months to exchange ideas, yet the conversation always circled back to that central question: How to extract the utmost from our lives.

One day, he remarked, “We talk a lot, but living requires action. A bus could hit us tomorrow, and all this would become irrelevant.”

Tragically, his words were prophetic. He passed away shortly after that discussion, not due to an accident but during a hiking trip.

His philosophies linger with me, serving as a constant reminder. I’ve penned numerous reflections on these topics, perhaps as a tribute to him — a way to keep his thoughts alive and my own understanding evolving. I find myself yearning for happiness.

“I just want to be happy,” people often express. This sentiment is arguably universal, perhaps even ancient. The Greek philosophers mused over it while enjoying wine among the vines, and it forms the bedrock of modern self-help ideologies.

However, those who have genuinely contemplated happiness often find themselves disenchanted with the usual platitudes — even if they hold some truth.

We know the drill: practice gratitude, stay in the moment, foster healthy habits, nurture key relationships, ensure adequate sleep, eat well, immerse ourselves in nature, read, slow down, and meditate — the list goes on.

I admit, I've contributed to this narrative, possibly to an embarrassing degree. Yet, as a therapist, I recognize that standard happiness advice often targets those in favorable situations, equipped with the time and energy to enact change.

For individuals grappling with trauma, stress, or challenging circumstances, generic advice may feel out of reach. They might find themselves awake at 3 AM, struggling with poor eating habits, neglecting exercise, and encountering conflict in relationships.

Consequently, pursuing happiness can be an unrealistic and unconstructive aspiration. A more attainable goal is to cultivate strength.

“Look well into thyself; there is a source of strength which will always spring up if thou wilt always look.” — Marcus Aurelius

Survival of the Fittest

We’ve all encountered the phrase “survival of the fittest,” stemming from Darwinian evolutionary theory. It suggests that organisms best suited to their environments are more likely to thrive and reproduce.

When viewed through the lens of human experience, this idea may seem harsh. Nevertheless, many individuals endure and even flourish amidst various hardships, contributing meaningfully to society despite challenges such as illness or disability.

The essence of Darwin's theory holds a profound truth: the ability to remain resilient and adapt to one’s surroundings significantly impacts life quality. Those who find ways to thrive despite adversity stand the best chance of creating lives they cherish and take pride in.

Isn’t that our ultimate aspiration?

We Are Shaped by Our Experiences

We often hear that it’s not the events we encounter but our reactions that matter. However, I’ve always believed that these two elements are deeply interconnected.

In many ways, we are influenced by our experiences. Trauma and challenges leave lasting marks, as do the environments in which we grow and live, along with the people we encounter.

Thus, the key to living life to the fullest isn’t about escaping these experiences but ensuring they do not diminish us. It’s about embracing who we are and who we have the potential to become.

Maya Angelou beautifully expressed this sentiment: “I can be changed by what happens to me. But I refuse to be reduced by it.”

“She remembered who she was, and the game changed.” — Lalah Delia
