New Insights on Apple's Latest Product Launch: A Closer Look

Written on

Apple's recent event, dubbed "Far Out," passed by like many things in life, except for the constants of failure, taxes, and mortality. These three seem to trail us like a group of monkeys chasing a banana truck after deforestation. It may sound dramatic, but it's worth reflecting on. Beyond the humor lies a sad truth. However, I digress. The focus should be on Apple’s latest showcase, which, as customary, emphasized the company's commitment to carbon neutrality regarding their new products. Yes, Apple, we understand you recycle extensively, but at this point, it should be expected rather than a selling point. This brings me to the actual selling features of the products, which, if I had to sum up in one term, would be “relative”—and I mean that in various ways.

The rumors preceding the event were so precise that there was hardly anything surprising left to unveil. For those like myself, who avidly followed the gossip leading up to the presentation, the event felt predictable. It has transformed into what I refer to as the "Rumor Confirmation Event," where the only real variation lies in the percentage of predictions that come true. This fall's launch was alarmingly close to 100% confirmation, landing around 85%, with the most significant surprise being the pricing, particularly in the US, which appeared favorable. But I’m jumping ahead—let's break down the announcements individually.

iPhone 14

This year's iPhone boasts notable improvements over its predecessor, the iPhone 13. See? It’s all relative in more ways than one. Additionally, there’s now a larger model, the iPhone 14 Plus, featuring an extra 0.6 inches (1.52 cm) of display. While I personally find large phones unappealing, I know many will be eager to get their hands on these devices!

Despite what some critics and memes suggest, the iPhone 14 is not merely a rebranded iPhone 13. Yes, it presents incremental upgrades, and those already using an iPhone 13 may not feel compelled to switch—perhaps aside from the larger display—but it does come with an improved version of the A15 Bionic chip, featuring an additional CPU and GPU core. While this may seem minor, it significantly benefits users with older models like the iPhone 8, SE, XS, or iPhone 11. Transitioning to the iPhone 14 is a genuine upgrade for these users.

It was amusing to observe how Apple attempted to frame last year’s iPhone 13 features as new for the iPhone 14. I wouldn’t be surprised if they have a script library for these presentations, as I experienced strong feelings of déjà vu. I can’t fault the critics for their responses, even considering the satellite SOS connectivity feature, which may save a few lives—initially available in the US and Canada, with potential global expansion for a fee. Life comes at a cost, right?

iPhone 14 Pro

I lack the time and energy to detail all the features crammed into the iPhone 14 Pro; you can compare them directly on Apple's website. Instead, I’ll focus on what I find most significant. First, let’s clarify: upgrading from the 13 Pro to the 14 Pro is likely unnecessary. That said, I completely understand the desire to make that upgrade.

The camera system is new and improved. For years, Apple has relied on a 12-megapixel camera, and while they’ve maximized its potential, other brands have pushed for higher megapixels. Apple has managed to extract quality close to that of a DSLR from just those 12 megapixels, which deserves recognition. Now, with a new 48-megapixel sensor that is significantly larger, this is a noteworthy advancement.

Apple's shift to this new camera indicates they know how to utilize it effectively. Meanwhile, the new A16 Bionic chip is less exciting, being simply faster and built on a 4 nm process, which aligns with expectations as it’s 1 nm smaller than Apple Silicon. It makes sense for processing more image data, so the new chip is anticipated.

The second feature that stands out is the Always-On Display, not just because it’s always active, but for the implications it brings. For users who frequently check their devices, this is a major enhancement. However, I view it differently. Since I use a wallet case, my screen remains covered, and the real benefit for me is the reduced power consumption.

I foresee the iPhone 14 Pro potentially lasting a day longer than its predecessor. Currently, I charge my 13 Pro every two days, and an extra day of battery life from the 14 Pro would be a welcome improvement.

Dynamic Island

Technically, this would be the third significant feature of the iPhone 14 Pro, yet I wish to address it separately due to its unique impact. I am baffled by the name “Dynamic Island,” which seems absurd. The name is so ridiculous that it has sparked laughter across the board. Whether you’re a devoted Apple fan or a staunch critic, the response is the same. And this is coming from someone who enjoys pineapple on pizza!

Apple should simply call it what it is—a pill. The fact that it reacts to touch doesn’t change its essence, despite what rumors may have suggested. What’s truly surprising is that despite its poorly chosen name, the execution is flawless. It’s incredibly clever; turning a design flaw into a strength.

Transforming an unsightly pill-shaped cutout into a new user experience that enhances multitasking on the iPhone is nothing short of brilliance. No, it’s not groundbreaking, but it’s an astute user experience that deserves recognition.

Apple Watch

Naturally, the Apple Watch Series 8 also received an upgrade, leading to a trio of Apple Watches. The Series 8 is a modest upgrade over the 7, with the only standout feature being the new temperature sensor and Crash Detection. If you own the Series 7, there’s likely little reason to upgrade, even with a trade-in.

The Apple Watch Ultra, however, warrants a different discussion. I plan to delve into this more in a future article, but for now, let’s just say it’s a compelling device. It’s clearly designed for active users and is not, in any way, a substitute for the Apple Watch Series 8 or any other model. This watch isn’t meant to complement your wardrobe but is built to endure rigorous workouts.

Comparing the Apple Watch Ultra to the Series 8 is futile; just don’t do it.

AirPods Pro

Lastly, we have the AirPods Pro, 2nd generation—everyone's favorite means of escaping noise. This product offers incremental improvements but may not warrant much excitement.

That said, it’s worth noting that if you miss features like an extra hour of battery life per charge and touch volume controls, it could be worth considering at a price of 299 in Europe. My first-generation AirPods Pro still function perfectly, so I’m not particularly inclined to upgrade. The new volume controls are appealing, but what might eventually sway me is the significantly enhanced noise cancellation that Apple promises.

Apple’s Far Out event felt lengthy rather than groundbreaking, but it was certainly engaging.

So, are you considering any of the new devices from this launch?
