# Essential Insights from My First Backpacking Adventure

Written on

Chapter 1: The Journey Begins

In January 2022, my best friend and I embarked on an exciting challenge: a 15-day backpacking trip to Norway. With its breathtaking landscapes, majestic mountains, and rich culture, Norway had always captivated my imagination. The allure of camping almost anywhere made this journey even more appealing, especially as a budget-friendly alternative in a country known for its high cost of living.

Shall I recount the various phases of this adventure?

Section 1.1: Preparing for the Adventure

Planning was crucial for such a venture! I dedicated time to researching Norway, charting the ideal route for our exploration, securing essential bookings (flights, trains, etc.), and most importantly, gathering the right gear.

Starting from scratch, I had six months to prepare, gradually accumulating a tent, sleeping bag, backpack, hiking poles, shoes, and cooking equipment. I sought advice, browsed forums, and read reviews to create a comprehensive gear list—perhaps a bit too exhaustive.

Lesson Learned: Like many novice backpackers, I soon realized that I had overpacked. Each additional item became a burden, and even a small weight difference added up significantly over the course of our trek.

Section 1.2: The Adventure Unfolds

Upon landing in Oslo, we headed westward towards the famous "Preikestolen" rock for a moderate hike.

The beginning of our journey felt surreal, as if I was waiting for signs to confirm that I was truly embarking on an adventure. It took a few hours to escape the city's hustle and immerse myself in Norway's stunning wilderness. Suddenly, it clicked—I felt that I was exactly where I needed to be.

I could share countless stories of my experiences, from sleeping under the stars to waking up to breathtaking landscapes that seemed straight out of a painting. The hikes, especially the iconic Trolltunga, were unforgettable, but the true magic lay in the less-traveled paths that revealed hidden gems.

Every evening spent around an improvised campfire after an exhilarating day, every kayaking session in the fjords, and the refreshing plunge into the Oslofjord post-sauna contributed to a profound sense of well-being. Despite the summer temperatures never exceeding 15°C, I can only imagine the chill of winter!

Two weeks passed swiftly, each day brimming with its own unique essence. After exploring the western regions, we took a night train from Bergen back to Oslo, allowing us to conclude our journey with a city exploration, including the enchanting Edvard Munch museum—an unexpected delight, even for someone who isn't typically a fan of his work.

What I cherish most is the unwavering positivity and camaraderie I shared with my friend, who was an ideal companion throughout the trip.

Lesson Learned: While my memories are largely positive, I wish I had optimized our travel routes better, as we relied heavily on public transport.

Chapter 2: Reflections on the Experience

In the video "5 Lessons I've Learned in 5 Years of Thru-Hiking," valuable insights about long-distance hiking are shared, complementing my own experiences from this trip.

Section 2.1: The Positives of Backpacking

The stunning beauty of Norway and its rich natural landscapes were at the heart of this adventure. The warmth of the locals, who often defied the preconceived notions I had heard, added to the experience. The signage for hiking trails, even those less frequented, was clear and helpful.

Transportation was plentiful and modern, often equipped with charging stations for our devices. Norway's connectivity meant that Wi-Fi was readily available, though I appreciated the moments of disconnection. Most importantly, I felt a constant sense of safety and goodwill, allowing for easy late-night campsite arrivals where payment could wait until morning.

Section 2.2: Challenges Encountered

While I refuse to be a pessimist, a few unexpected challenges did arise—an integral part of any travel experience. The weather was unpredictable, with heavy rain during our second week, which even caused a rockslide on our route.

However, my preparation allowed us to manage these inconveniences. Finding suitable camping spots proved more difficult than anticipated, but overall, it wasn’t a major issue.

The most significant downside was the cost of living in Norway. Although my gear will serve me well in future trips, the expense of daily living there is something to consider.

Reactions to My Adventure

Questions from friends and family ranged from “How will you wash?” to “What if you encounter a bear?” While I did wash in a river (albeit cold), I was fortunate not to encounter any bears!

I understand the concern from loved ones, as this was an unconventional choice of vacation. Their apprehension was compounded by my own fears and doubts leading up to the trip. Yet, the reality unfolded differently, transforming into one of the most enriching experiences of my life and a catalyst for future adventures.

Lesson Learned: I will no longer let the opinions of inexperienced naysayers deter me; instead, I will trust those who have faced similar challenges.

To Conclude

For nature enthusiasts with a flexible budget looking to explore backpacking, I wholeheartedly recommend a visit to Norway, the land of the midnight sun. For novice backpackers, here’s my advice: trust your instincts. Backpacking may resonate with you or not, but it’s undoubtedly a unique experience. Equip yourself wisely, budget accordingly, and prepare to explore.

Have you backpacked in Norway or elsewhere? I’d love to hear your stories!
