The Key to Stronger Relationships: Speak Up and Be Heard

Written on

Chapter 1: The Communication Gap

Since 2014, I have experienced over 40 different Airbnb stays across various countries and continents. Alongside this, I’ve dedicated countless hours to researching properties and scrutinizing reviews to find the perfect accommodation. Despite my efforts, I have encountered a few mishaps along the way.

Time and time again, I’ve observed a peculiar behavioral trait in some individuals that can hinder their success in numerous vital aspects of life. Here’s a straightforward scenario that I frequently witness:

Imagine you’re staying at an Airbnb and discover that the air conditioning is malfunctioning. Frustrating, right? You endure several uncomfortable days, and when it’s time to leave a review, you mention the issue with the air conditioning.

However, the host responds with something along the lines of, “The air conditioning works! You should’ve informed us; we could have shown you how to operate it!”

This pattern is shockingly common. A significant portion of negative reviews stem from guests experiencing issues—like a clogged drain or missing essentials—yet they choose to remain silent instead of addressing the problem during their stay. They wait until departure to voice their dissatisfaction.

This behavior baffles me.

Interestingly, this scenario reflects a broader issue in life. Many individuals are habitually passive; they do not express their concerns. When faced with problems, they might ignore them, accept them as they are, or hope for an automatic resolution.

The repercussions of this approach are significant:

  1. Increased Resentment: By not addressing issues, individuals only deepen their frustration. Each day that the problem persists adds to their misery, much like those who dread their jobs.
  2. Missed Opportunities for Improvement: By speaking up, individuals can provide others with the chance to rectify the issue, explain it, or offer solutions. Most Airbnb hosts appreciate being informed about broken items; they rely on guests for transparency. If a lightbulb is out or a hairdryer is broken, they are usually quick to replace it. After all, they don’t live there, so how would they know unless informed?
  3. Potential Misattribution of Fault: Failing to report a problem can inadvertently place blame on you, especially if you don’t communicate it in a timely manner. I always inform my hosts of any issues immediately—I don’t wait. Delaying only worsens the situation, and I refuse to be blamed for something that was already faulty upon my arrival.

The same principle applies to life in general. I have very few regrets, but the ones I do have stem from not speaking up when I should have. When faced with challenges or unfair treatment, I often held my tongue and let my frustrations build up inside.

For instance, I once collaborated with a client whose team members were undermining my efforts. I deeply regret not addressing this with the client at the time. I convinced myself it wasn’t significant enough to mention and didn’t want to create tension. In hindsight, I should have been forthright about the interference affecting my work. Upholding my values and communicating the problem could have led to a better resolution.

Ultimately, the project didn’t reach its full potential, and we parted ways at the conclusion of our agreement. The client never grasped the underlying issues.

Some may advise against voicing concerns, suggesting it’s easier to remain silent and avoid conflict. However, those who share this perspective may also be projecting their insecurities onto you.

Instead of asking, “What would they do?” consider, “What should I do based on my values and aspirations?”

Today, I make it a point to express any concerns immediately, whether with coworkers, friends, or service providers. Even if they can’t address the issue right away, it’s vital for me to communicate. This way, there’s no ambiguity about my feelings, and I maintain my integrity.

Of course, this requires vulnerability. When I voice complaints, I must remain open to the possibility that I may be mistaken. Embracing this openness allows for growth and understanding.

You might wonder, what if they respond poorly? While that’s a possibility, it doesn’t concern me. What matters is my action. By speaking up, I bring awareness to the situation. If they react negatively, it reflects on them, not me.

What issues in your life need addressing? Whether it’s a relationship, workplace concern, or service dissatisfaction, take action. Don’t let frustrations build up until they erupt.

Approach the matter thoughtfully. Request a one-on-one conversation and share your feelings on the situation. More often than not, others will appreciate your candor and work together with you to find a solution.

And if they don’t? Then perhaps it’s time to reevaluate those relationships. By taking this step, you’ll also gain clarity on who your true friends are.
